    Swans fail to grab pundits

    Swans fail to grab pundits

Not sure about you guys, but not sure I like the attention. We don't really want the Melbourne media catching on...do we?

This lack of respect for the Swans goes back to 2003. In that year, everyman and woman and their dogs tipped Sydney to come last or second last.

I decided to work out which of the Melbourne 'experts' (via the Herald-Sun and The Age), tipped the Swans for the least number of victories in that particular year. The main culprits were found to be Scott Gullan from the Herald Sun and Emma Quayle from the Age. They both tipped Swans victories about 5 times each for the entire 24 game season.

I honestly don't care what they think. Journalists aren't exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Also, their job is to sell newspapers in Melbourne, so I doubt a million swans articles would appeal to many of the residents of Melbourne apart from the small, but vocal number of South supporters. The newspapers in Sydney should be doing a better job.

I'm surprised at Emma Quayle - I thought she had more sense.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

You would think a team whose predominent colour is Red could be noticed but of course I think Rohan Connally has hit the nail on the head. We are too far north for the Victorians to notice us. We aren't poor enough to be slagged off, and we are not yet in the top 4 but are threatening (you have Got to admit that!) so the next best thing is to not notice at all. Probably doesn't help that we don't appear to have any AFL writers in Sydney itself like they do in all the other centres.

In fairness, her specialty is the draft, and let's face it, how many Swans fans predicted top 4 in 2003? She was harldy alone.

But that wasn't what top40 is pointing out. To only tip us 5 times over the course of an entire season, even after we've shown our worth over a number of weeks, shows she either is very ignorant or detests the Swans immensely.

Quayle and Gullen proved to be worse offenders in 2003. The tipsters were derived from the following publications and media:

                        The Age
                        The Sydney Morning Herald
                        The Herald Sun
                        The Daily Telegraph
                        The Australian
                        Inside Football
League Teams (the then Fox Footy Channel)

                        About 35 in total.

Bear in mind by about Round 12, there was no doubt that the Swans were going to be a force in 2003. They had won 7 of their past 8 games, including victories over last year's (and indeed that year's) Grand Finalists, Collingwood (in Melbourne) and Brisbane. They were in fourth place on the ladder.

Still, notwithstanding 15 wins in total for the season, Quayle and Gullen could only pick 5 times a Swans victory. Simply put, like for 2011, no respect.

Seems a classic Melbourne footy hack, caught up in the local melodramas and indifferent to interstate clubs. I mean, how interesting is Bird's stress fracture compared with the current big Melbourne yarns - Scully, Essendon's form, Malthouse's future, Ricky & the Girl, etc.

I'd love to see stats on how footy pundits have rated non-Vic teams over the last decade. Did anyone see the Lions coming?

On Twitter the other day Emma tipped Bulldogs to go top.

                              .
The Bulldogs seem to be a popular pick with the Victorian experts. Somehow I think that their chance of success with their current roster has passed them by, but then again I may be wrong.
One thing I am confident about is that once again Sydney will prove these Vic experts wrong.
