Adam Goodes is the best Swan I've ever seen play, and beyond that he's my favourite football player. Sure he can be frustrating as all hell at times, but I don't believe I've ever seen a more dominant player when he's on song. Adam Goodes is, to me, the embodiment of why I watch football.

I am too young to have ever watched Skilton- Paul Kelly did amaze me but I still view Goodesy as the better player. I think it's pretty subjective, though.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Goodes is without doubt the greatest Sydney Swan ever, but no one can get close to Skilton.
Lockett was one of the greatest of all time, but played less than one hundred games for us. I think longevity has to be taken into account.
Kelly was a super player and close to the leagues best between 1995 - 2000, but didn't have the ability or versatility of Goodes.

decide at the end, players become better after they are gone. I love Paul Kelly but he gets better every year he is retired. Let goodsey have the same time. I dont think Goodsey has ever been as loved as say Kelly in the 90s or skilton seems to have been back in the old days.

At his best maybe, but I think reliability would have Kelly and Round ahead of him. Never had the privilege to see Skilton in action, so I couldn't fairly compare him to Goodes.

Nope, no jest. He was an absolute monster in the early 80s.

Loved the big bloke but even Barry would be pissing himself being compared to Goodes. Got a feeling Plugger may have had a bit over Barry as well.

It will be interesting to see how the best player in the league goes with the GC Suns on Brownlow night.
On Goodes, today's Hun says he is, for periods, the most destructive player in the game. He's more versatile than Skilton was, but how else you'd compare them, I don't know. I never saw Skilts play but those who did see him rate him above any other Swan..
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

A different type of football to when Skilton played , but Goodes must surely be one of the greatest Swan

Having not seen Skilton play I couldn't coment.

Based on pure value to the team I'd be thinking along the following lines:

                      1 Kirk
                      2 Kelly
                      3 Goodes
                      4 Plugger
                      5 O'Loughlin

with apologies to Bayes, Hall and Bolton J

I think you could argue Hall ended up a better player for sydney than lockett. I would like to see some stats to compare. I know lockett lifted a rabble and gave a profile to the team and had a great influence on other players coming in and the success but Hall was a champion for us. He is still underrated when they talk about the big forwards, you hear pav brown riewoldt etc and i think Hally gets forgotten.

I saw Bobby Skilton play for The big V against hapless South Australian State sides on Adelaide Oval as a kid.. He was an amazingly dominant player ,racking up a huge amount of touches. He was a ball magnet with a loud voice and demanded the ball often running it considerable distance before kicking a goal or delivering a bullet like pass. His prescence on the field was awesome. He was a cut above the rest even in the star studded side he played in on those days.Hard to compare eras but he never faded out of the game and trying to tag him was a joke.

Depends on your criteria. Lockett is one of the greatest of all time and Hall isn't in the same league as him. If it comes down to what each contributed to the Swans then it's a closer thing. I would still choose Lockett though because without him we would probably still be a joke in this city and the success we have enjoyed pretty much sincde 1996 probably wouldn't have happened.

I always remember Lockett as a great full forward and Hally as a really really good centre half forward....

Good point. Kell got his Charlie in 1995 but he considered he played much better in 1996. However the votes got split amongst other very good players who came on board. If Bobby picked up 3 in low achieving teams, then maybe he still holds the crown. However Goodsey is right up there for elegance.
