NEAFL (Eastern Conference) Round 5
Sydney Swans Reserves v Tuggeranong Hawks
Friday 29th April 2011 2.00pm
Lakeside Oval
Note the new starting time and venue above!
Tuggeranong have been the cellar dwellars of the AFL Canberra comp for a number of years now but with a good crop of juniors starting to emerge (some of whom played as topups with the Swans Reserves a few years back), they don't look to be easy pushovers this year.
Tuggeranong, in fact, have one of the best records against the Reserves in recent years having won 4 out of their past 8 encounters. Granted, all of the victories have been in Canberra where the Reserves' away record is shaky at best.

2010
R5 Tuggeranong 22.12 (144) defeated Reserves 13.13 (91) @ Greenway Oval
A depleted Swans side of only 12 listed players and 20 in total fell away in the last quarter to suffer their only loss to date. Trent Dennis-Lane led the way with 3 goals while Campbell Heath, Daniel Currie and Dylan McNeil were named as the Swans' best players
R8 Reserves 28.12 (180) defeated Tuggeranong 11.6 (72) @ Greenway Oval
A last-minute change of venue due to the inclement weather proved no obstacle for the Reserves, who steamrolled the disappointing Hawks. Top-up player Kieran Emery had a day out with 8 goals, followed by Trent Dennis-Lane with 5 and Lewis Johnston 4. Sam Reid, Dylan McNeil and Pat Veszpremi were named as the Swans' best players.
R12 Reserves 20.20 (140) defeated Tuggeranong 9.6 (60) @ Sydney Cricket Ground
A strong first quarter where the Reserves kicked 7 goals to none set up an emphatic victory. Jesse White provided a fantastic aerial display and was rewarded with 8 goals. Sam Reid, in the absence of Daniel Currie, excelled in the ruck for the first time while Lewis Jetta turned on the style and speed in a very impressive second half.
R16 Tuggeranong 10.7 (67) defeated Reserves 8.11 (59) @ Greenway Oval
A very disappointing loss by the Reserves who led at each break only to fall away to a fast finishing Hawks outfit. The team dominated for most of the match but found it hard to break a congested Hawks defence. There were 8 separate goalkickers with Daniel Currie, Gary Rohan and Sam Reid the best for the Reserves

Last Round
Both teams had the competition wide bye last round, so let's have a look at the results from the week beforehand.
Reserves 20.18 (138) defeated Belconnen 4.5 (29)
Despite the inclement conditions, the Reserves turned on a masterful display to rack up an impressive win. Having been notoriously slow starters in the previous games, the Reserves were switched on this time round, kicking 4 goals to none in the first quarter and then going on with it despite the atrocious weather. Mike Pyke booted 4 goals, with Luke Parker and Ben Haren ending on 3 each. Jarred Moore in his element in the wet and was ably supported by Nathan Gordon's hard running on the wing and Lewis Johnston's spoils down back.
GWS 14.17 (101) defeated Tuggeragong 10.11 (71)
GWS were hot favourites after their impressive away victory over regining premiers Ainslie to start their season. however Tuggeranong put up a huge struggle, trailing by only 3 points at the last break only to see the Giants kick away with 3 late goals. Forward Ash Pocock and Sean Ellis both had 3 goals.
Team List
Listed players
Changes
In: Sumner (non-playing senior emergency), Spangher (injured), Otten (injured/rested?)
Out: Tadhg Kennelly (senior promotion), Jarred Moore (senior promotion)
Probably too many players here, they'll probably continue the practice of resting one emergency completely as a backup for the seniors and might have to rotate a Kruger or Haren out as well.
Edit: All 17 have been named although I'd still expect one of the emergencies to be rested after halftime
Academy Players/Topups
Still waiting on the replacements for the 3 out below. I'm not sure if they will re-allocate the numbers. I hope not as without a scoreboard we will not know the jumper allocations for certain.
Edit: going in with only 23 one less than the allowed 24
In: Robinson
Out: Jackson Potter, Blake Guthrie, Jack Lynch (All NSW-ACT RAMS u18)

Tuggeranong
TBA - still unnamed!
Summary
The Hawks may have the wood on the Reserves in Canberra, but at home, the Reserves have had their way with Tuggeranong; winning the last 2 encounters by 80 and 71 points. With close to a full-strength line up and with competition heating up for spots in the seniors, another big Reserves win is the most likely result.

Talking points
- Trent Dennis-Lane - Not named as an emergency but with a strong showing could place himself in contention, especially if our forward line structure continues to be haphazardly constructed.
- Lewis Roberts-Thomson - Finally made it through (half) a game unscatched, I reckon he'll need a couple more games before he'll come under serious consideration.
- Lewis Johnston - Had his best game in defence last week and justifiably earns a spot in the emergencies. The return of Tadhg is unfortunate but he could edge Everitt for his spot if the latter continues to struggle in defence.
- Matt Spangher - The only football memory I have of him is Kizza running straight through him in Round 4 last year. Hopefully he'll provide us with more favourable ones later this year. With B2 now retired, he's a great backup to have in our tall defensive stocks.
- Mike Pyke/Mark Seaby - Did the rain hurt their chances this week? It be interesting to note the ruck/forward time split tomorrow.
