At the time I and others thought that the Swans may have had a quiet word in his ear that Roosy was only a few years away from calling it quits and that he was at the forefront of their plans moving forward.

Added to that, by pulling out of the running it gave a leg up to Lyon who I can assume whilst not as tight as Ross/Roos, he was/is a mate.

Which other jobs has he applied for unsuccessfully ??
I've certainly not heard that he withdrew before, just that he was overlooked.
Longmire said he was disappointed but philosophical about missing the St Kilda job after being the early favourite. "It is a bit disappointing but you've got to pick yourself up and get on with it," he said.
That quote, from this article, is from the days after hearing Ross got the job.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

I'm not willing to make a call on Longmire yet as it's too early, all I was suggesting was that our process really wasn't any better than Brisbanes and could prove just a big disaster. Remember Vossy got the lions to the finals in his first season.

I understand the point that we knew what we were getting with the internal candidate, but Geelong were in the same position with Sanderson, went through an interview process, and found a better candidate in Scott. On top of that the board made the appointment so early that they didn't even know who was available.

I don't think it's valid to compare the process of selecting an AFL coach to a corporate situation as there are limited number of potential AFL coaches in Australia versus 1,000's of potential candidates for a corporate position at any one time. Candidates can work in an organisation for 20 years before they reach the top of the tree, that simply doesnt happen in AFL

Our process was much better than the Lions'. Our bloke had served his apprenticeship and proved his mettle to the previous coach, the board and the players, who all seem to be happy with the process and the outcome. And while Voss in his first year was riding on Matthews' coattails, his (and the board's) atrocious handling of the Fevola affair left the club up that well-known creek.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Well the board appointed him so I would expect them to be happy, as for the players they might like having a comfortable known person in the role but that is not necessarily going to get the best results. As for Vossy's first year lets not re-write history:

"Voss made his coaching debut in Brisbane's defeat of the West Coast Eagles in round 1, 2009.

Voss's first season as coach could be described as one of exceeding expectations. The rookie coach managed to guide the Brisbane Lions into their first finals campaign since 2004 including a comeback elimination final victory over Carlton after trailing by 30 points early in the fourth quarter."

I take your point about Vossy's first year.
But it is not always the case that a board is happy with an appointee, and as for the players' opinions, we owe it partly to them that we ended up with Roos instead of Wallace. I'd imagine that Roos's opinion also carried some weight, as I think it should. And while it was a good idea to get Bradshaw, in spite of his injury problems, I don't think any of our decision-makers would have gone after Fevola at any price, let alone what it cost Brisbane.

Sammy Reid played a good game tonight, probably close to his best for the club. He's only going to get better....
