It's pinning the arms to prevent disposal that causes the problem. Tackling, like so much else, has become an increasingly technical business these days, and I don't see how you can change the trend except by more tinkering with the rules. Wonderful prospect that is.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Zac Smith has been brilliant this year (and a smokie for the Rising Star), not to mention the fact that the Suns are the number 1 side in clearances (before last round)

I hope more effective than the Judd pressure point pinch.

The MRP works in mysterious ways sometimes but on this point they're position is pretty clear.

Swans accept Mumford 2 week ban with early plea. Big man now must see out season with 93 carryover points. Could prove costly come finals.

Swans trio Mumford (2 weeks), O'Keefe (reprimand) and Malceski (fine) all accept Match Review Panel charges.

I have been pondering the outcome of the match review panel decisions. i think the AFL has the potential to really stuff the game up here - not because the rule is making the game soft, but because it runs so inconsistently with the way the holding the ball/incorrect disposal rule is being policed.

Players are now clearly being encouraged to (perhaps thats taking it too far -maybe more accurately disguise efforts to) throw the ball and or drop it when tackled to demonstrate the move it on at all costs strategy - ie reduce ball ups, reduce congestion etc. But for the defenders one of the few ways you can actually prevent this from occurring is the sling tackle. Because by slinging the player the ball becomes a genuinely random event - unlike when judd throws the ball into the hands of a team mate - I just wonder whether what actually needs to happen is the AFL to bring back a tougher holding the ball/incorrect disposal interpretation - reward tacklers who tackle without needing to sling to make it random.

In fact I'd even think going back to the ball it up if the ball doesn't come out speedily interpretation would be preferable than having a situation where you can simply drop the ball into the hands or in the direction of your teammate.

ICAMore, the number of times a ball just 'spillages' from a fair tackle in many games, not just involving Swans, and the tackler goes unrewarded is amazing. The HTB rule is routinely ignored.

The whole points system is the biggest flaw ruining the code atm. Why did Dale Thomas only get 1 week for a deliberate off the ball hit which caused the player to be off and had a major impact on the game, yet mummy gets 2 weeks with what used to be deemed as a perfectly normal tackle?

Thomas went out of his way to mame or hurt his tag who at that stage was kicking his butt. Yet he only got a week because of a stupid points system.

So in effect if you have say no points and one day you are having a dirty game and are being tagged out of the game..all you have to do is let your fist do the talking and the best you will get is either "points" or a week ban.

Argh why does one bother eh.

The outcome shouldn't be a big factor. Mick Malthouse made a good point the other night - much as that hurts me to say. AFL doesn't have weight divisions. If a big man tackles a little man, there's a higher chance the little man will get injured, but should that mean you can only tackle someone your own size? Or that a little man should be allowed to try to do his worst? The action used should be either legal or illegal, but not legal only as long as nobody gets hurt. If the sling tackle is causing a lot of concussions, then ban the tackle by all means, but don't punish the players who play hard but within the rules.

Did u see the tackle laid by the geelong player? Looked the worst and by far the most dangerous of all of them and recieved no penalty. Unbelievable, would have got six weeks in a league game, Mummy would have gone unnoticed. Sometimes, it's hard to defend AFL as a soft game to leagur fans who see that. I have no idea how the AFL expects to attract NSW and QLD fans in a non contact sport
