VFL Round 13: Sydney Swans Reserves v Queanbeyan Tigers

    NEAFL Round 13
Sydney Swans Reserves v Queanbeyan Tigers
    Saturday 25th June 2011 12.30pm
    Sydney Cricket Ground

"Hold on, wait a minute, didn't we just play the Tigers???!" This is not a misprint, an error or even a reversion back to the old AFL Canberra comp where out of 8 teams, two of them were called the Tigers (Wagga being the other). With all the complexities involved in trying to devise a draw that includes crossover games between the two conferences, this was just one of the many strange circumstances that have arisen. Adding to the weirdness of the situation, the previous game 2 weeks ago was scheduled for the SCG only to be shunted out to Lakeside Oval at the last minute, but this game originally scheduled for ANZ, then BOP, will now take place at the SCG.

At least the Swans won't have the excuse of not knowing what to expect tomorrow!

    Eastern Conference Ladder

    Past Meetings
    2011
    R11 Reserves 15.12 (102) defeated Queanbeyan 7.11 (53)
Poor ball use by the Swans and good pressure from the Tigers ensured a close contest for the majority of the game. The Swans' superior fitness came to the fore in the last quarter as usual and they buried Queanbeyan with 4 goals to none. Jesse White kicked 6 goals with Paul Bevan excelling as a leading forward.

Goals: White 6 Moore 3 Heath Bevan 2 Thompson Gordon
Best: Bevan, McNeil, Currie, Heath, Murphy, Sumner

    2010
    R2 Queanbeyan 16.9 (105) defeated by Reserves 19.14 (128) @ Dairy Farmers Park
A high-scoring shootout down in Canberra, 17 listed players fronted for the side and the goals were shared round with 5 players booting 2 goals each. Nick Smith, Mike Pyke and Daniel Currie were named as the Swans best on the day.

Goals: Smith Rohan Playfair McNeil Dennis-Lane 2 Bevan Hirst Miles Gordon Heath Reid Veszpremi O'Dwyer Johnston
Best: Smith, Pyke, Currie, Veszpremi, McNeil, Reid

    R10 Reserves 30.14 (194) defeated Queanbeyan 8.14 (62) @ ANZ
In an impressive display harking back to the halcyon days of 05/06, the Reserves were too good for a disappointing Tigers outfit. Dennis-Lane collected his second 7-goal haul for the season, ably supported by Henry Playfair's 5 and top-up player Eugene Kruger's 4. Not surprisingly, Dennis-Lane was the Swans best player on the day, ahead of Pat Veszpremi and Brett Meredith.

Goals: Dennis-Lane 7 Playfair 5 Kruger 4 Gordon Emery Veszpremi Moore 2 McNeil Picken McKaigue Meredith Lynch Johnston
Best: Dennis-Lane, Veszpremi, Meredith, Thornton, Playfair, Kruger

    R15 Reserves 14.7 (91) defeated by Queanbeyan 19.18 (132) @ Sydney Cricket Ground
A severely depleted Reserves outfit comprising of only 10 listed players put up a spirited fight for most of the match but in the end succumbed by 41 points. Gary Rohan and Patrick Veszpremi were the dynamic duo up front kicking 6 and 4 goals respectively. Chris McKaigue fought hard in defence.

Goals: Rohan 6 Veszpremi 4 McNeil McKaigue Pearson Malcolm
Best: Rohan, Veszpremi, McKaigue, Reid, McNeil, Thompson

    Last Round
    Reserves 17.13 (115) defeated GWS 3.11 (29)
A tight and intriguing struggle developed during the early stages of the game where GWS's pressure and tackling strangled the Swans' movement of the ball. After an adjustment during the second quarter where the Sydney players started to kick longer and more direct, they managed to break the Giants' swarm and coast to a comfortable victory. Daniel Currie starred both in the ruck and at full forward finishing with 4 goals. Luke Parker was the pick of the dominant midfielders.

Goal Kickers: Currie 4 Gordon 3 White Dennis-Lane Otten Everitt 2 McNeil Meredith
Best Players: Parker, Heath, Meredith, White, Gordon, Currie

    Queanbeyan 10.13 (73) defeated by Tuggeranong 17.14 (116)
A classic 8-pointer, the Tigers' loss ensured they surrendered their top 4 spot to the rising Hawks. The Tigers held a 6 point lead at half time but were poor in the second half, kicking only 4 goals in response to the Hawks' ten.

Goal Kickers: Kavanagh Conroy Quade Daniher Wescombe 2 Jensen
Best Players: Conroy, Heaslip, Griggs, Walsh, Dickinson, Daniel

    Team List
    Listed players
    Changes
In: Jetta (Senior demotion), Pyke (quad)
Out: Everitt (Senior promotion), White (Senior promotion)

Pyke fails to make the team for the 2nd week in a row. I really hope we're not going to see a ongoing problem

Jetta makes his first Ressies appearance of the year, and should it resemble his short stint last year, the crowd will be in for an electric display. Will the coaches throw him behind the ball and ask him to run and carry the ball like the want and expect, or will they expect him to toughen up by playing him in the guts and direct him to tackle like a maniac and go for the loose balls without fear?

The departure of the two leading forwards from last week White and Everitt opens up a spot for Lewis Johnston to be swung forward (Please Henry!) as there is enough cover down back with Spangher, Heath, McKaigue and Otten all capable of playing as key defenders. Otten played his best game of the season last week as a marking forward and probably will take up the same role this week. Dennis-Lane might also enjoy the extra space afforded by the departure of the senior-bound duo.

    (Insert weekly Haren question here)

Academy Players/Topups (one to be omitted)
    Changes
    In: A.Moody, E.Moody, Robinson, Wray
    Out: Blake Guthrie, Jack Lynch

Guthrie, Lynch drop out to the NSW/ACT RAMS U18. Jackson Potter, who didn't play last week is also on RAMS duty. Eric Moody, dropped from the RAMS returns to the side alongside his younger brother Andrew.

    Talking points
    • Moore - Can't even make it to the emergencies list any more, where does his future lie?
    • Dennis-Lane - Was it the flu that was really responsible for his lacklustre showing last week?
    • Jetta - Let's fire up Jets! Longmire has already indicated that he expects Jetta's stay to be 'short'
    • Johnston - Play him forward, play him forward, play him forward.

Queanbeyan squad (1 to be omitted)
    • 2. Ryan QUADE
    • 4. Toby CONROY
    • 7. Paul FRANCHI
    • 8. Neil IRWIN
    • 9. Will GRIGGS
    • 13. Roy JAQUES
    • 14. Alex OVERS

    • 24. Todd DICKINSON
    • 25. Jared DANIEL
    • 29. Daniel CAMPBELL
    • 32. Ryan PRICE
    • 33. Michael WESCOMBE
    • 34. Casey WALSH
    • 37. James MANIE
    • 38. Mitch HEASLIP
    • 45. Travis BULL
    • 46. Beau WATTS
    • 48. Jon ELIAS
    • ?. Mitch PRICE
    • ?. Stephen CAMP

In: Overs, Price, Bull, Elias, Watts, Franchi, Campbell, Price, Camp, Manie
Out: Sam Daniel, Paul Slater, Kaine Stevens, Brett Freund, Tim Cook. Liam Walker-Eastick, James Kavanagh

    Summary
The Tigers do possess some goalkicking firepower in Kavanagh, Conroy, Quade and Daniher but if and when the Swans midfielders get on top as expected the Ressies should end the day with a 10 and zip record.

Bit concerning that E.Moody is dropped from the Rams.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

Excellent, important for Currie to have some back-up and while White and Everitt are in the seniors, a good opportunity for both these guys to have a good go up forward.

Thanks ugg - I'm very pleased to see Pyke back on the field. And let's hope the reserves' run continues.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

ugg, Jenny obviously got busy. I can confirm tho that Gate A is definately the main members gate.

I'd imagine you can sit in the Ladies and they'll probably open the gate to let you sit in the Brewongle concourse as well.

I'm still only 50/50 of attending at this stage. Blacktown would have been a much easier logistical option for me unfortunately....

Just a reminder to reserves fans about tonight's telecast of the Swans-Giants match. 6.30pm on Main Event Channel 518.
"It's up to the rest of the players in the room to make a new batch of premiership players next year," Adam Goodes, triple Bob Skilton Medallist, October 7, 2011.

Thanks Triple B! I did get distracted!

At this stage, you'll be restricted to the Members Area. They might open the Brewongle Concourse if needed.

We've also just been told that they are now going to open the food outlet behind the Member's Pavillion.
