1st qr down, and i can't recall one play-on from a mark. Riewoldt slips over going for a grab leaving Teddy to mark uncontested, miles from anybody else. So what does he do - what Geelong, Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton, Hawthorn - even (ffs) Richmond do, and play on?

No.

He stops.

Goes back behind the mark, which is currently guarded by Riewoldt 5m behind him.

He looks each way for a couple of options.

He can't find anybody open (surprise surprise).

He kicks to a contest.



So does it frustrate anybody else? Or is it just me?

Yes it does, the swans dont understand the game. Everything is kick it to a contest or to the oppostion yet we cant man up how many times is a st player alone. I am not sure what the coaching staff is teaching them.

You would hope that most people had learnt by now, not to post general observations about the team or club as a whole, arising from part of one match, while that match is still in progress.

If I had owned a smartphone (were they even around?), and I had ignored the above rule, I certainly would have posted some pretty regrettable stuff during the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the 2005 semi-final.

I'd be happy if Horse held a special clinic this week teaching the difference between behinds and goals. Surely he'd know a thing or two about it.

Yeah, and we did it well. Whenever there was an option, we played on. Whenever there wasn't, we stopped and either waited for a target or went to a contest that was weighted in our favour. On a couple of occasions the players got it wrong, but you can't expect any team to get it right 100% of the time.

Point is, there's nothing wrong with taking your time when there's little on offer, so long as you go quickly when you can. That's what we did, that's modern footy, and we smashed St.Kilda all over the park.

Its teaching them to create a stoppage when we dominate in ruck(Mummy) Kick to a contest,manup so nobody breaks free and get a ball up then win the ball from there. Obviously a great tactic coz we won! When we played on and ran with handball we did not look like the Swans at all! Usually someone kicked a point at the end of this play to restore the faith of the old believers.Keeping the opposition hopeful till the end was the reason for that tactic so victory tastes better.

You're simplifying it too much.

There's a reason we're struggling at the bottom of the 8, and it's not down to inaccuracy.

Also know as tempo footy. And when we bring our intensity, we're very good at it.

Agree that is still giving me heartburn as well - I want them to ALL practice goal kicking this week, BETWEEN THE BIG STICKS!!! set shots, on the run, from acute angles - I really dont care how long it takes - just bloody well do it Longmire and the coaching staff - we should have won by 50 yesterday. I was joking with Ange (yes Aussie Ange was back) during the game that I reckon we will get 37 behinds - I was only 14 off!!!

Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but after the first quarter we did start playing on when we could, took some risks and despite some sloppy disposal (ill-disciplined, indiscriminate kicking into the 50 - Mal, I'm looking at YOU) the intensity was right up.

Generally given the type of game now played with the pressing up, opportunities to run and go following a turnover are critical to scoring. When we were doing it, we looked very good. When we stopped and propped, it meant the Saints could get back to cover the forwards.

Balance of the side looked good although - as may've been mentioned elsewhere - a crumber would be very, very handy.
