we missed some real sitters in first qtr Jack, White ?
The McGlynn handball to Goodes that cost a goal? Sam Reid's sitter from right in front in the 3rd.
That would be the one negative for me - which hasn't ultimately cost us this time - not taking the gimme chances for goals. I have no issue with missed set shots from 50 or snaps under pressure that miss. But when you're 20m out on next to no angle, or have a team mate clear running into goal and can't hit a target, that is a negative. Things like that can turn momentum very quickly and give the opposition a lift when they know they've dodged a bullet, and you can't afford to do that in any game, let alone a final where they will punish you.
Apart from that though, the effort was fantastic, and to turn the tide in the last quarter showed what our team is made of.
I'm on the Chandwagon!!!
If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.
Our kicking at times was truly awful.
missed easy targets.
The biggest miss was Kennedy to Goodes in the 3rd, which ended on a Saints goal, just when we were about to arrest their momentum.
Too many easy marks in the D50 by St Kilda. We made it too easy for them at times.
And Mcglynns Handball, as Mike pointed out. We were at the other end of the ground, so it looked like a certain goal with 3 swans jumpers to none in the goals square.
Oh well, didn't matter in the end.
Our kicking has improved.
McGlynne made up for handball by 2 goals (which he hasn't done for a while)
Peb kicked 4 - which has definitely NOT been done for quite a while
Swings and roundabouts. We lost some, then I was thrilled at some of the combinations that are now coming together. They are learning each other's "space" on the paddock. Its taken 23 games, but the combos are starting to click (circa 2005). I am not saying we will win this year, but I feel the building has mighty strong foundations.
If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhood
That was what surprised me about the game last night.
Our delivery at times was woeful, and I didn't think we were playing our best footy. but the saints looked worse.
In that 2nd term when we dominated they were clearly rattled, and struggled to find the ball.
Touche with McGlynn, Primmy.
As did ROK after conceding a goal to Goddard, he followed up straight away with one of his own.
We didn't get enough score on the board in the second quarter for the domination of play we had. I was ropeable when we managed to manufacture a three on one 30m out from goal and still not kick one. McGlynn - I am looking at you (though you did come good later on).
In the first quarter, there was far too much picking out of the Saints' spare man in defence. Our forwards needed to do more to at least make contests rather than allowing uncontested marks, though if I watch the replay I will probably see the Saints defence was blocking well. Fortunately, the Saints were doing the exact same thing at the other end of the ground (ie kicking to Ted et al) so it didn't prove terminal.
The third quarter was a little bit of a worry, though you have to expect a decent side like the Saints will come at us at some point. They managed to constrain the damage, at least, which was a positive.
Parker struggled to pick up the pace when he came onto the ground. I realise it is hard for a first year player, especially when you enter the game so late. But he was holding back from contests he needed to attack. Hopefully he'll start next week and get a chance to work into the game from the start.
