Scott mentioned it a few weeks back after the Swans/Hawks SF.

In what was generally a god awful night for Swans fans, the one shining light was Ross Wilson. He totally rocked the house down. Would have been a so much better choice yesterday...

As far as I could tell from watching on TV, many in the crowd were singing the National Anthem, and they ended up being a bit ahead of Vanessa Amorosi, probably because of dramatic presentational pauses. So she would have been drowned out a bit and the Anthem would have seemed 'finished'. To my mind, performing the National Anthem is something done at American events; isn't it partly because they have a difficult anthem to sing? I firmly believe that, at a mass gathering, the National Anthem should be played so it can be sung by all; any 'performers' should be leading a corporate sing of our Anthem, not doing a solo.

My main gripe with the pre-match stuff was the way that Channel 10 put adverts over the retiring greats. I was looking forward to seeing our (and other) players one last time and they didn't show it. It was highly disrespectful to the players. I wouldn't have minded if they'd covered everyone being announced, and then cut to ads while the last vehicle wound its way round the G, but to not show it at all. Grr.

Yep, Wilson was great and certainly still has IT!
Wasn't it our 05 GF that had all the 70's rockers performing - Darryl Braithwaite, John Paul Young etc? I thought that was great and just the sort of entertainment that goes down well with Aussie footy fans.

Too many fans are ho hum about actually singing the anthem to make it inspiring. Not really a criticism, I barely raise more than a whisper myself, unless it's at an Aussie game.

The greatest singing of the anthem I have personally witnessed was at the '93 Socceroos v Argentina playoff at the SFS. Sellout crowd and sung by everybody with gusto, making the hairs stand up on the back of the neck.

yeah watching on TV, the loaf was off....and i am a big fan of his, but seriously a bad choice..
The AFL need to start getting in some of the more current and yngr performers along with a great of past...

If that woman hadn't been there to support Meat, it would have been a mammoth disaster instead of just a disaster. Quartermain said something straight after he sung, like "truly incredible!" I laughed to myself thinking yeah, for all the wrong reasons.

On another matter (not sure if I should have started another thread) - I can't help but be impressed with Anthony Hudson. He is such a staunch Cats supporter yet I think you would never know it listening to his call. He was just as animated and sounded just as excited when Collingwood was doing good things yesterday as he was when the Cats had it. I always think this about him. Am I off in my judgement? It was him that called our preliminary final in 2005 wasn't it?

I was there too. I don't specifically remember the anthem, but I do remember it as one of the most enjoyable sporting events I've ever been to. A great festive spirit in a diverse crowd.

From memory, I think it was Friday night so it would have been Ch 7 broadcasting. I've got the DVD to check but I'm sure someone else here will remember.

The late Clinton Grybas did the classic call on 3AW of the Grand Final. Clinton would have been the best caller today if not for his untimely passing.

I can confirm the PF was played on 16th September 2005 which made it a Friday night. West Coast played the next day on 17th and Gf was on the 24th.

Huddo was the man who saw it but didn't believe it - the semi final against Geelong. Gained the utmost respect for him as a commentator that night being a Geelong supporter calling his team getting their hearts ripped out by Nick Davis.

2005 was in the old TV rights I believe.

Would bet London to a brick it was Hudson who made the 'Davis, Nick Davis, I see it, but I don't believe it' call.

Of course it was a rehash of his call in the 2003 QF v Port when Jude ran into an open goal in the 2nd qtr romp...

It certainly was Huddo that called the winning goal. Amazing call really considering he'd been gutted by what he was seeing.

I pulled out my video of this game last weekend to watch as I was having withdrawl (?spelling) symptoms, only to find it had white fuzzy mould all over the actual tape.

For me it was Australia v Uruguay 2005 (3 weeks after we won the flag - best period of sports support in my life). They had booed and whistled through our anthem 4 days earlier in Montevideo so we gave it back to them during theirs and sung the stuffing out of ours. It was awe-inspiring. Anyone who reckons you can't get an atmosphere at Homebush should have been there that night.

You should be able to buy the 5 DVD 2005 series. Has all finals (Grand final with different media call options - MMM, 3AW and Ch 10) plus season in review.

What's a video????? I have a box full in the garage now and eventually will get thrown out.
