Just seemed relieved that he's got another chance and I really hope he does well. Poor thing.
Thanks for the clip it was interesting to hear him speak.

Unfortunately to many people and incorrectly reported in the media but clinical depression is not the new black. Three weeks with a personal trainer doesn't fix clinical depression. So breaking up with a girlfriend/boyfriend, other externally induced bad feeling is not clinical depression.

So he wouldn't have clinical depression. The main thing he is very excited to be given another chance in Sydney and very keen to repay the Swans for the opportunity.

wow that was quite open by him. Hopefully this is the wakeup call he has needed. He seemed quite humble to be getting another chance, and that he had to earn it. I know you hear it from all the players, but he seemed quite convincing. Best of luck to him.

        Pre-season should fix him up.

          honest interview thats for sure...
just sounds like he got lost in himself with what he was trying to achieve out of his footy club, and needed to go away and sort himself.
But he sounds confident in his ability when he knows he is fit enough

Wow, great interview. Hope it works out, if anyone can turn him around we can and he could turn out to be a real steal.

Geez thanks for that clearly, very informed view you've got. I had no idea you were privy to his personal life.

While he did spend time with a personal trainer, no club gives a player a leave of absence because they've broken up with their girlfriend or for a small matter. The extended period of time, and the nature of the way he spoke in that interview (incredibly introspective about the struggles of an afl footballer) lead me to believe that perhaps his mental state wasn't in the best place. Putting two and two together...

Anyway, he's not going to just come out and tell everybody if he was seeing a psychologist. Seeing a personal trainer is harmless football related knowledge. Revealing the nature of ones personal life is clearly very different.

Obviously I know as much as you, but I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the possibility that he might have been dealing with depression and maybe still is. The rumor does exist. rumour Mitch Morton ... What was the real story ??? - BigFooty

It's none of my business though and should not have asked the question. His interview just provoked an immediate curiosity.

There is no doubt that MM has real talent and maybe being given the flick by Wretchmond and getting immersed in Bloods culture might just show how good a footballer he can be.

My feeling is we have a steal on our hands.

We just need to cleanse Morton of the filthy West Coast and Richmond cultures that he's been part of. One embraces drugs, the other thinks September action is the tail they get on the monday after finishing 9th.

Starting a response off with a sarcastic comment doesn't really bode well for what follows.

Some people on RWO actually do other things in life apart from following the Swans and therefore we, as a result, acquire qualifications and experience that allows us to make comments on other things apart from football.

If you're really interested in the subject of mental illness, have a read up on mood disorders and periods of melancholy as compared to clinical depression. Might help with the roll eyes condition.

As I said depression is not the new black. Apart from advances in the media and some celelebrities and other public personalities who have come out about having depression, there is still an overwhelming prejudice in society for people that have it and other mental disorders. Just go out somewhere and compare someone saying publicly they have a chronic gall bladder problem or someone saying they are bi-polar or are on anti-psychotic medication.

As much as I love the Swans, it is a business and reading stories on Big Footy about his personal doesn't help the guy. He has enough behavioural demons to get past without being labelled.

It's his business and anyone who experiences periods in their life where they don't think they are coping, should immediately seek medical advice.

They say that "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem". Sadly every day we lose untold people to suicide and it's not broadcast in the media. Such a tragic loss of life that could have been prevented.

You are right, it isn't any of your business or anyones business. We can all wish him the best and in a healthy nurturing atmosphere as we know the Swans can provide, I'm sure he will connect with his true potential.

Now how has your breathing recovered after the Johnston trade?

I was commenting on the possibility of our new player having depression (as was brought up on this thread) and the likelihood of it affecting his football career, previously and in the future.

So it is football related as it affected and shortened the careers of Nathan Thompson and Jonathon Hay.

I know, he should just snap out of it. I'm sure the football will do that.

And what am I, some vacant hollow without any knowledge in life apart from overly opinionated football commentary? Your two posts on this subject have been highly patronising so yes, the eye-rolling was appropriate. I only wish you could relieve your know-it-all condition.

When did the 'prejudice in society' associated with mental conditions become relevant to our discussion or the 'depression is the not the new black' comment? I have no idea what your harping on about. I've made no judgmental comments about those suffering form mental illness. Despite your assumptions, I known too many people affected. Close family and friends included.

Like I said, It was an absolute mistake to bring up the question, but don't play the righteous card with me when your quite the hypocrite. I without any certainty speculated about the reasons why he has to take a leave of absence, which I again admit was an error of judgement. You came out and declared my suggestion wrong. Now you think that Richmond supporters on bigfooty 'labeling' him is an injustice when you 'labeling' a non-sufferer may be just as wrong.

For both our sakes, let's move on shall we? No matter what did or did not happen, I hope MM finds a home at the Swans and brings us success.

Oh and btw, finishing a response with small dig didn't bode well for what preceded. I would have smiled, but you do understand I have that condition.

Wow, Been touring Thailand on my new Triumph street triple and dodging flood waters and come back to RWO to read the above thread.Season can't start soon enough and personally I don't care how depressed anyone is, Its depressing to read about depression. Players have private lives away from football and IMO they should remain private. What they do on the football field is surely enough to argue and talk about.I am excited by a forward line of Walsh ,MM, Reid, TDL, White, Pyke, Spangher with contributions from the Gopher and J. Bolton. I expect to see ROK there a bit more often too. At last a forward line to match the backline,a great group of followers and a servicable centre line.
