I have to disagree with recruiting, I think so far it's been extremely intelligent.

It will take a long while before it becomes obvious whether McKenna's greater focus on mature/middle aged players (Ablett, Brennan, Brown, Rischitelli, Bock, Iles) will work better that Sheedy's focus on Youth (Davis, Ward, Palmer, Scully) and Pensioners (Bogan, Cornes, McDonald).

My impression this year was that the Suns looked like kids playing men this year, so at least in the short term (and with less hard bodies). I feel confident that there will be some horrendous thashings headed the Giants way.

More hyperthically, I wonder whether GWS will end up with greater salary cap preassure down the road, the result of having an even greater % of players all of a similar age than the Suns?

Shows just how stupidly run this whole thing is - Sheeds is past it. I've had to question his sanity a few times when I've heard him being interviewed. If this is the case, and Sheeds is just some sort of a strange figurehead, this could really backfire badly. I'd be guessing a bit here, but I wouldn't think the people in the western suburbs would take too well to this sort of stuff - their bullsh** detectors are generally pretty finely tuned, especially to outsiders such as this mob from the AFL who think they can waltz in and take over. Would be interesting if the details of Sheed's true level of involvment gets out....

I actually think its better that Mark Williams is the main coach. I'm assuming Kevin probably has a role similar to Bomber Thompson over at Essendon.

Kevin Sheedy is the master salesman and they couldn't of picked a better person for the job. He didn't coach Essendon for 23 years or so because he lacked talent in many areas. It was always the players fault and he never let any of the mud stick on him.

So while Kevin sells, Williams can focus on coaching the team. I honestly don't think people out west would notice the difference really.

In many ways it's very clever and is it that much different to when Barassi took over Sydney?. Except he didn't have such a skilled assistant I don't think.

I just don't think Mark Williams is being given the credit that that he deserves.

Agreed Bas, Sheedy was the perfect choice as foundation coach, as is Mark Williams for his Senior Asst and then (no doubt) as their long term coach. (I think people forget he is a very successful Premiership coach!)

I think Mark Williams is/was a very, very good coach. I know Sheeds was a great coach in his day. I also think its a bad idea to tell the world that one person is the coach when in reality its someone else. Obviously the AFL/GWS think that getting headlines and press from Sheeds is more important but who would want to support a team that operates like this?

Yeah but we don't know anything for certain, I'm not defending GWS, I can't stand them, but 'head coach' can mean anyting these days, so whatever they have set up is up to them to make work. Heck, they have appointed a coach for every blade of grass growing out of the Westpac Centre garden to assist Nathan Buckley!

AMAZING! ... that it took so long ... any other corporate that was run along these lines would have run out of money long ago (or been sold for a billion to Allan Bond)!

When you arrange it so that you oversee the application process, and then ensure that you are the only applicant, chances are you don't get a great outcome, and you can only hide it for so long!

Congrats GWS, maybe now you will listen to the stakeholders ... the only way is up from here!

I would think they'll use them as trading currency as and when their value rises. It will be interesting to see how their "culture" develops, but I will not be shocked if it's club/franchise/dollars first and foremost, and individual's interests and preferences very, very, very far behind. Though I also think some of those young 'uns who've joined GWS will be hoping to have a couple of good seasons, make some big bucks, play plenty of games and then get a trade somewhere better. So maybe it will be win-win...
