I have lots of love for Lenny. Classy, tough consistent player who comes across as genuinely considerate and good-hearted. The story in hindsight is a little sad, because he loved the Swans so much and that he turned out as such a 'Sydney type' of player. There are a few article here are there about how he would go to the SCG every home game (even when we were @@@@) and dream about playing for the Swans.

It wasn't meant to be I suppose. Anyway he certainly doesn't mind and I'm happy with how Fozzie and Jude's careers turned out so not much harm done.

Found it. Our premiership in 1996?????? Fossie was no star????? well was to me. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, who was to know Fitzy would break down, still, you would have thought they'd take the Sydney boy just for the exposure if he was top ten quality, which it seems he was

I'd always thought I got drunk after we LOST the GF in 1996, but I guess I got so drunk that I forgot we won???

It amazes me that 'journalists' can make such glaring errors. Getting a name wrong here or there is annoying, but not all that huge, but not knowing who won a premierships is ridiculous!

Overall, 30% of the kids drafted in 1998 achieved a measure of success (100 games), but 100% of the five ex Rams selected by interstate clubs that year achieved the same measure of success. Hindsight may be 20/20 vision, but clearly the ex Rams did well.

That the Swans couldn't/didn't select a single Ram that year may simply be a statistical anomaly (on the above evidence possibly a costly one).

But is it a statistical anomaly?

Nothing in the article says there wasn't a bias against local talent (albeit inadvertent). Perhaps the Swans had no greater idea about Sydney footy than the NFI Melbourne media (which was the subject of this thread).

So let's get back to bagging journo's

Dissapointing that either the journalist or their source makes a point of saying they wouldnt be swayed by the fact they were from Sydney/NSW. Now I dont know what depth that draft was deemed to have but we have seen in mo st years that apart from the top two or three picks the draft is pretty much a lottery and the next fifteen or twenty could be selected in any order. Theres no such thing as a player being a smidgen better, its purely subjective opinion and surely it would have to be a better option in that situation to choose someone who you know will put their heart and soul into playing for a club they have followed all their life versus someone you hope will get on board. That said we really lost nothing in the end in the two comparisons.

I assume Nick Davis & Ray Hall (Richmond) were two of them as both played in Sydney league growing up. Hall was originally from Woy Woy

The other one was Craig Bolton when he was recruited to Brisbane.

Craig Bolton was also a Ram
I think McVeigh was also a coastie

We ended up getting 2 of the five (Nick Davis & Craig Bolton) so not bad in the end.

And I think Roos tried for at least two of the other three before his end.

Ben Fixter was also part of that generation but he didn't make it

What a great generation. Between them there are 8 grand finals, (2 wins - Davis & Bolton- Hall the only player to miss out on playing a gf- Bolton was also emergency listing for the 2001 and 2002 Grand Finals), I think all but Hall played for the international rules team, at least three rising star nominees (Davis, Hayes & McVeigh), one Norm Smith medal winner (Hayes) and currently about 950 games between them (obviously on Hayes & McVeigh still playing)

I agree. It is interesting to read about that 1998 NSW/ACT Rams side though. I guess it is what you would call a 'grey swan' (no pun intended), a kind of statistical anomaly, as it were. We all know that B2 was underrated by many, including Leigh Matthews who was the coach to let him go, and Hayes missed the U18 championships that year through injury, which rarely helps a player's draft prospects.

You can complain about the melbourne media, but the Sydney media deliberately mislead about the Swans.

Daily telegraph today has the swans playing at 7:10pm (not 4:40pm), and only on foxtel. They are on 7Mate as well.

Good way to kill off a few viewers.

You give them too much credit. Just plain and simple incompetent I'd say.

To keep this thread rolling, I heard Taylor on the radio today calling a game. He spent half his time calling the wrong names and scores and the other half apologising for calling the wrong names and scores. At the same time Tim Lane spent most of his time sucking up to Malthouse.
