NEAFL Round 5
Sydney Swans Reserves v Tuggeranong Hawks
Saturday 22nd April 2012 11.35 am
SCG
Cross all your appendages and pray to your respective saviours that the rain stays away in the next two days. Hopefully this match will be played out on the luscious greenery of the SCG rather than the dreary surroundings of Lakeside Oval. The Reserves will be looking to bounce back from a tough outing against Ainslie last week and edge their way back into the Top 5. Tuggeranong have been disappointing so far this year, managing only 1 draw from their 4 games this year, and were upset at home by Sydney Uni last week.

R5 Reserves 18.15 (123) defeated Tuggeranong 1.6 (12)
Constant wet weather in the days preceding this game saw it shifted from the SCG out to the adjacent Lakeside Oval but this disruption did not affect the Reserves winning form. Tuggeranong forced numbers back early and combined with the rain the Reserves could only kick 1 goal in the first quarter. However, a shift to a man-on-man strategy and intermittent relief in the weather saw the Reserves stamp their class to run away with another comfortable victory. Trent Dennis-Lane kicked 5 late goals to top the goalscoring list. Byron Sumner was a class above in the wet with defenders Lewis Johnston and Chris McKaigue helping keep the Hawks to just a solitary goal.
Goals: Dennis-Lane 5, Lamb 2, Murphy 2, Gordon 2, Currie, Robinson, Roberts-Thomson, McNeil, Haren, Kruger, Seaby
Best: Sumner, Johnston, McKaigue, Gordon, Seaby, Thompson, Murphy

R14 Tuggeranong 8.9 (57) defeated by Reserves 33.14 (212)
The Reserves were in impressive form, their dominance of the midfield led by the tapwork of Dan Currie and the excellent finishing skills by the imperious Trent Dennis-Lane and the sprightly Matthew Spangher saw the team thrash the Hawks for the second time in the year.
Goals: Dennis-Lane 12, Spangher 5, Gordon 3, Meredith 3, Johnston 3, Currie 2, Wales, May, A.Moody, McNeil, Robinson

Last Round
Ainslie 17.9 (111) defeated Reserves 12.13 (85)
The Reserves jumped off to a good start and a mini-break on the Tricolours only for their forwards' accurate kicking brought them back into the match and eventually into the lead. The loss of Brett Meredith and Jordan Lockyer to injuries hurt the balance of the side and the margin proved too big to reel back in. Jack Lynch showed he was as adept up forward as he was in defence with a decent 4 goals return while Tommy Walsh won plaudits for his engaging battle with ex-Crow Ken McGregor at CHB. Mike Pyke rucked for most of the day and when he went for a rest in the last quarter he managed to hang onto 5 contested marks in the F50 in the last quarter, converting 2 of them.
Goals: Lynch 4, Dennis-Lane 2, Pyke 2, Moore, Weir, Lockyer, Lamb
Best: Walsh, Lynch, Moore, Pyke, Jack, Armstrong
Tuggeraong 16.8 (104) defeated by Sydney Uni 16.10 (106)
Another upset in Canberra with the supposed strugglers of the competition Sydney Uni matching the Hawks goal-for-goal all the way through.
Goals: Lovett 3, Pocock 3, Stevens 2, Richards 2, McCabe, Johnson, Kickett, Cleaver, Litchfield, Monger
Best: Robinson, Lovett, Cleaver, Smith, Monger, Cameron
Team List
Listed players
Changes
In: Gordon (non-playing senior emergency), Biggs (injury)
Out: Tony Armstrong (senior promotion), Jordan Lockyer (injury)
At least one of the 4 named on the seniors extended bench won't play, and we will find out who is the lucky one later this afternoon. There is also the possibility of another of those 4 being rested as the non-playing emergency.
Lockyer hurt his hammy during the first quarter last week but has not been mentioned in the Swans' injury list. Meredith also went off injured, possibly took another knock to his knee but has been named and needs the game time under his belt. He should start in the midfield with McNeil, Moore, Lamb, Cunningham and TDL the other midfield options available. Kruger played only a portion of the game last week as he slowly regains his fitness during his convalescence.
Walsh took a defensive role last week to counter the size of McGregor but with no equivalent danger this week he might be shifted forward again bringing Lynch back to defensive duties.
Academy Players/Topups
Changes
In: Barrett, Carter, Gillingham, Lewington, Nixon, Roberts, Wales
Out: Mitch Crawford, Blake Guthrie, Doug Hadden, Brandon Jack, Rory Pryor, Jordan Weir, Stephen Wray
The Swans Academy play GWS Academy later today so plenty of the usual topups will be unavailable for Sunday's game. There are some interesting names in this list though, including Tim Barrett from Sydney Uni (who have a bye) who won the NEAFL Eastern Conference Rising Star Award for his 4 goal performance (against Tuggeranong) last week.

The big news to come out of the Hawks dressing rooms is that Jason Akermanis has signed on for them, but sadly won't be available for this match. As this is the only regular season meeting between the Reserves and the Hawks, it is unlikely that Aker will get a chance to get re-acquainted with his old mate Jared Crouch.
The other name that stands out from the Hawks' team sheet is that of ex-Richmond midfield Marc Dragicevic
Summary
Even without the usual core of topups and having to rely on mostly local league fill-ins, the Swans have a strong listed contigent available to them and will start hot favourites on Sunday.

Talking points
- TDL kicked 12 against the Hawks in their last meeting but with a new midfield role will be very hard pressed to repeat this feat. The coaches, I suspect, will be looking more for his tackling and contested work than his goalkicking tally anyway.
- Walsh has now spent time in attack, defence and shorter stints in the ruck but it remains to be seen where his best position in the seniors will come from.
- Keen to have a second look at Shane Biggs after his Reserves debut in Round 1 where he was played behind the ball.
- Lamb needs to step up his contribution after 3 relatively quiet performances so far. We've seen what he can produce in his 2011 games which were rudely interrupted by injury ailments.
