Who is the Swans best recycled player?

Tom Harley asked the question during the 2nd qrtr against North today.

Who do people think is the best Swans recycled player?

The only qualification is that their original club didn't want them.

My thought is probably Craig Bolton of recent times. I'll have to put the thinking cap on for further back than that.

If Lockett doesn't qualify i'd probably go with Bolton, until Kennedy plays a few more games
You can't argue with a sick mind - Joe Walsh

Darryn Cresswell. (Although he didn't play for anyone else, I believe he was on Geelong's list....)

Ted Richards - based on expectation - i don't think anybody expected him to be as solid and reliable as he is - especially given that he is nearly always undersized

I think we should restrict it to players who were on another team's senior list and were not wanted by their previous club, so that would rule out Kirk and Hall.

If the question is best performed recycled player, then I have to go with Craig Bolton (All Australian).

People talk about the Swans playing Moneyball in terms of their recruiting strategy. It's not entirely accurate, as the Oakland A's, the baseball team that coined the term, recruited the players they did because they didn't have as much money to spend on players. The Swans, on the other hand, probably would be near the top in terms of spending by their football department, because we can't afford to "bottom out".

However, one of the things that the Swans did do well, I think, with their strategy of 'recycling' players, was to recruit players who had qualities that the market undervalued, and get the best out of them. Not because we couldn't afford better players, but because we didn't get access to the best players because of the order of our draft picks.

Take Rhyce Shaw, for example, who was recruited to replace Tadhg's run off half back when he went home to Ireland the first time. His disposal wasn't the best, but he was quick and he could run and carry. Sure, he's not the best rebounding defender in the competition, but he's good enough for our game plan.

The other thing we did well was in achieving synergies by bringing in players who were identified as good fits with the culture of the club, so that the whole was greater than the sum of its parts, by giving them a specific role to play and giving them the confidence to perform their role.

This is not to say that the strategy is infallible, as there will inevitably be failures. As Michael Lewis pointed out in Moneyball (p.291), all Billy Beane (the GM of the Oakland A's) did was "to make what is an inherently uncertain judgement, the future performance of a baseball player, a little less uncertain. He's not a fortune-teller, he's a card counter in the casino". And to some extent, the 18 AFL coaches are as well. That's not to say one recruiting strategy is necessarily better than the other, Hawthorn for instance took a very different approach (as discussed in "The Draft"), but every club is trying to do the same thing, recruit a team to give them the best chance of winning a flag.
