Quads are hard to shake off. I had a lower quad injury in my playing days that corkscrewed the muscle from the kneee to about 2/3 of the quad. Goodesy's sounds like it is a smaller muscle, but it still takes time. As one poster said he doesn't want to come back too soon. I did that and lasted 15 minutes and I was out for another 5 weeks. It is one of those injuries that can feel fine at training but when you take off in a game, if it is not quite healed, can be a distaster. Mike Pyke had a bad quad injury last year IIRC. Thankfully these days scans and rehab are eons ahead of bygone eras.

To put a positive spin on this.....his 304th could well have been a gift in advance (that game said a lot about the club this year). We are well positioned for these border guys to go in and play with confidence, show what they have got, and have some time in comfort knowing they will play consecutive games. Sitting at 5-1 for the Swans is a much better place than we have been for a long time, the team belief is there.....and importantly just about every other side is having similar issues with injury.... to state the obvious this is the AFL, not dream camp. Goodsey will get some perspective from his injury (i.e. not used to it and probably come back hungry as my Beagle for dinner)

Good call. It is going to be survival of the fittest and who can win games when their best is out. To win enough games to make the top 4 is going to be an effort for the top teams. Essendon are doing a mighty job with an injury list as long as your arm. They have found out about their depth big time. If Goodes and Spangher get back and playing around the same time and they can stay on the park we are well placed. Not to mention the saviour Tom Mitchell.

We need to stand tall, work hard as a team and as a whole make up for the absence of Goodesy. It could break our season, but if the boys work hard, it could also make our season. 6 weeks off now for Goodesy might make the next 6 weeks tough, but it might give him that little bit extra come the pointy end of the season - and who knows one moment of brilliance from him could be the difference between a good season and a great season.

Time for the rest of the team to stand up and be counted. Get well soon Goodesy!
I said this very thing to my daughter this afternoon when the news came through.
If it had to happen, then now was the time when looking at our draw and a six week break hopefully will have him really fit and firing when the really tough games come around.

Unfortunately we need him to make sure of the easier games. Some of the tough ones we may not win anyway.

I think one of the reasons we are excited about the development of this team (and one of the reasons the media are finally sitting up and taking notice) is that we aren't as reliant on our best players playing well to control games. Goodes' goals were fantastic against the Crows (and his injury might have cost us the game, in the end) but other than an important cameo in the final term against Freo he's been "just going". ROK has been important after his slow start, and Jude's second half against the Hawks was telling. But their contributions have just been part of the equation.

We've been winning even without arguably our second most important player in Mumford. JPK has been fantastic marshalling the midfield, but it has been the ability of Parker, Bird, Jack, McVeigh and Hanners to step up at important times to dominate in the midfield and kick goals. They are not all going to fire every week, but the fact we have so many capable of firing when it is their turn is encouraging. In the past, these type of player were seen as handy support acts, rather than the core matchwinners (notwithstanding the fact that McVeigh and Jack are both BS past winners).

And of course, the different dimension that Jetta has brought to the side is immense.

So the media reaction to Goodes' injury (and ours too, possibly sub-consciously) is that it is a blow, and we'd like to see him out there, but the Swans still have enough weapons without him to challenge pretty much any other side. I don't think many would have thought that for the last couple of years - particularly in the two post Hall and Kirk years.

                      Yep, agree fully Liz.

Take Gold Coast for example, the injury to Ablett has forced some of their young blokes to step up - and they have.

We may find that the same will occur with TDL/White/Walsh/Nipper if given a chance.

Love the photo accompanying the latest injury report of Goodes consolling Jetta after the game. Very typical of the bloke.

And now to add insult to injury Broughton has been cleared by the tribunal after being charged with rough conduct by the MRP after a sliding incident that was very similar to the Thomas one that Thomas got off. So Goodes is the only one to get suspended in this new 'crackdown' even though, unlike these other two, he didn't hurt anyone! The AFL has got themselves into a pickle on interpretation of this.

Broughton had to get off after Thomas did. Indeed, I thought Broughton's was less bad than Thomas' because there is a chance he may not have seen Swallow, while I have no doubt Thomas knew Rohan was close to the contest. Also, he didn't plant his feet into Swallow's ankle. Swallow just tripped over Broughton's body. I was perplexed by Gerald Whately's contention that the Broughton one was closer to the Goodes one than Thomas' one was. i think they were both a little different to the Goodes incident, but pretty much similar to each other.

This article in the Age pretty much confirms that if you get to the ball first, you're fine. If you get their second, you're in trouble, even if it is a split second later and you could reasonably have thought you had a chance to get to the ball first. Dunstall pretty much said the same thing on AFL Insider tonight. Getting to the ball first is the ultimate and maybe the only defence, regardless of injury caused.

Ball first is slide key as Broughton let off

(Still beats me how Walker's was graded as negligent, rather than reckless. It is hard to see how he could have thought he was going to get to the ball first.)

It's the rule that keeps on screwing us. Goodes doesn't get to break the record at the SCG, Thomas takes out one of our most exciting players and best forward options and then Walker is cleared and kicks 6 goals to get Adelaide over the line.

                              Incredible stuff.

I think it's been said before but Goodes' own poor record at the tribunal is the only reason he missed a game. Without the poor record, he, like all the other cases, would have received a reprimand. He screwed himself with the stupid studs in first tackle in the NAB cup.
