VFL Round 11: Queanbeyan Tigers v Sydney Swans Reserves

    NEAFL Round 11
Queanbeyan Tigers v Sydney Swans Reserves
    Saturday 9th June 2012 2.00pm
    Dairy Farmers Park

The Reserves make their second and last regular season trip to Canberra, heading to Dairy Farmers Park for a top of the table clash with the resurgent Queanbeyan Tigers. After a very poor 2011 in which they only won 4 games, a few eyebrows were raised in the nation's capital when the Tigers opted for former Essendon rookie Kade Klemke, who at 21 years old would be younger than most of his charges, as their new playing coach. Klemke brought along some quality recruits with him; his brother Ben Klemke, ex-Bomber teammate Jarrod Atkinson, ex-Sydney rookie Matt Beckmans and of course himself to bolster the Queanbeyan squad. The bold move looks to have paid off with the Tigers seating on top of the Eastern Conference ladder, with only a 4 point loss to the UWS Giants their only defeat of the year.

The Swans were very impressive in their away form last year, winning 6 of the 7 Canberra games with their only loss unfortunately coming at the Eastern Conference Grand Final when they were upset by Ainslie. This reversed a trend of poor results in Canberra in the preceding years.

    Eastern Conference Ladder
    Past Meetings
    2011
    R11 Reserves 15.12 (102) defeated Queanbeyan 7.11 (53) @ Lakeside Oval
Poor ball use by the Swans and good pressure from the Tigers ensured a close contest for the majority of the game. The Swans' superior fitness came to the fore in the last quarter as usual and they buried Queanbeyan with 4 goals to none. Jesse White kicked 6 goals with Paul Bevan excelling as a leading forward.

Goals: White 6, Moore 3, Heath 2, Bevan 2, Thompson, Gordon
Best: Bevan, McNeil, Currie, Heath, Murphy, Sumner

    R13 Reserves 33.22 (220) defeated Queanbeyan 5.2 (32) @ Sydney Cricket Ground
A weakened Queanbeyan side, debuting a new coach and a few youngsters, were no match for a disciplined outfit. Trent Dennis-Lane ran riot in the first half with 8 goals, before ending with 9 while Nathan Gordon and Matthew Spangher also had days out with 7 and 6 goals respectively. Jarred Moore set the tone early with his forward half tackling and distribution while Luke Parker won plenty of ball in the midfield

    Goal Kickers: Dennis-Lane 9, Gordon 7, Spangher 6, Moore 3, E.Moody 2, Sumner 2, Parker, A.Moody, Currie, Pyke
Best Players: Gordon, Moore, Parker, Spangher, Currie, Sumner

    R20 Queanbeyan 4.13 (37) defeated by Reserves 21.24 (150) @ Dairy Farmers Park
A side with little to play for had little resistance for the rampaging Reserves who were still in contention for the minor premiership. Nathan Gordon continued his hot form with 6 goals and an all round BOG performance. Dylan McNeil and Jarred Moore dominated the midfield.

Goals: Gordon 6, Dennis-Lane 5, Spangher 2, Lamb 2, Moore 2, McNeil, Lynch, Malceski, Robinson
Best: Gordon, McNeil, Moore, Rohan, Lamb, Malceski

    Last Round
Reserves 16.13 (109) defeated Gold Coast 8.8 (56) @ Blacktown International Sports Park
In the wet and damp, the talls Mark Seaby (in the ruck) and Matthew Spangher (at CHF) dominated for the Swans as they romped to a comfortable 9 goal win over the Suns. The physicality and pressure of the home team was too much for Gold Coast whose sloppiness proved costly as they could only manage 3 goals to 3 quarter time.

Goals: Spangher 4, Morton 3, Everitt 2, Seaby 2, Moody, Cunningham, Mitchell, White, Walsh
Best: Seaby, Spangher, Biggs, Everitt, Moore, Davis

    Queanbeyan 16.10 (106) defeated Ainslie 13.11 (89) @ Dairy Farmers Park
Any lingering doubts about the Tigers' chances of winning the premireship were extinguished when they overcame last year's premiers in a tight contest. Full forward James Kavanagh kicked 4 goals to extend his lead at the top of the goalkicking charts.

Goals: Kavanagh 4, Freund 2, Swans 2, Conroy 2, Atkinson, Liddle, Bryce, Griggs, Stevens, Jolliffe
Best: Griggs, Swan, King, Overs, Quade, Atkinson

    Team List
    Listed players
    Changes
    In:
Out: Tom Mitchell (???), Nick Malceski (seniors promotion), Andrejs Everitt (seniors promotion), Nathan Gordon (traveling emergency)

While there were explanations for both Jed Lamb's and Jordan Lockyer's absence from the team last week, the mystery that is Brett Meredith's absence from this team will continue for another week. Mitchell's omission will also cause some consternation - let's hope it is nothing too serious.

There was a strong contingent of 17 listed players last week but due to Parker's injury, McGlynn's suspension and a need for a travelling emergency this drops down to a worrying low number of 13.

Armstrong for the most of the year and Malceski last week played the rebounding defender role, so another Swan will have to take up the reins in their absence. Brown showed promising signs in his first game back last week won't play the full game, so it will probably fall on Biggs or Kruger's shoulders.

Spangher, Morton, White and Walsh form a scary looking forward line that is sure to cause problems for the Queanbeyan backline. The midfield looks a little weak with Moore, McNeil and Cunningham the regulars in that area. White had a cameo role off a wing in the last quarter last week and might be an option if things get desperate for Crouch.

    Academy Players/Topups
    Changes
In: Cullen, Jack, Johnston, Kenny, Krochmal, Lycakis, Wynn
Out: Nathan Bosschieter, Max Carter, Andrew Moody, Sam Naismith

RAMS are playing WA this weekend so the likes of Wray, Robinson etc are unavailable but we do get the services of Jack who was dropped from the RAMS side.

    Queanbeyan
    In: Cummins, Franchi, Shea, Manle
    Out: K.Klemke, B.Klemke, Daniher, Jensen

4 big outs for Queanbeyan with the Klemke brothers both very prominent for their side this year and former Mulrooney Medalist Mitch Daniher also unavailable.

    Summary
Both sides are missing key personnel and the team that adjusts to their absence better may well claim the 4 points.

That looks like a big win for the 2s. Looking forward to seeing some comments.

They kicked away again at the end! I stopped following when they came back within 12.
