    Nine-goal quarters

Now , we've only got to go back a week for the last time we scored nine goals in a quarter.
But until last night , when was the last time we conceded nine or more in a quarter ?

Sadly that 2009 Carlton game was the afternoon of the Swans first Hall of Fame dinner night

Shows that we can't play our "trademark" (according to the commentators) contested/defensive brand of footy at places like ethihad against quick teams like Essendon, which is what we did in the last qtr and got carved up. Good to see us playing a quick game in the first 3qtrs, how good did we look off the rebound!
Forward line is starting to fire!

I wouldnt worry about it. We simply thought we had the game won, and put the queue in the rack. That combined with Essendon barely missing in the last quarter (they kicked, what, 9.1). If they kicked a more usual 5.5, no one would be talking about this game

Every game bar playing gold coast etc has ebbs and flows they just maxmised their opportunity.

Good luck to them, they are a watson injury away from being a bottom 10 side
Theres not much left to say

Watson could be in the stands and the umpires would still give him a free kick.

You have to remember that they kicked 1.11 in the first 2 quarters. Some of their misses were unbelievable. We were outplaying them all over the ground but they could very easily have been a lot closer - thank goodness they weren't!

Very true. He's a great player, but still very true!
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

It is interesting to note that if we had have conceded 9 goals in the first quarter and won, I am sure most fans would be glowing in their praise of our amazing ability to come back and win in such difficult circumstances.

The last thing you see is usually fresh in your mind.

Essendon were 2nd up until this week and had won 12 of 13 games in the sterile and narrow shed.

I thought our guys stuck to the game plan as much as they could and that the Bombers couldn't continue to serve up what they did for a whole 4 quarters, they have too much pride and instead they turned on WHAT THEY ARE CAPABLE OF but still fell short.

Yes we conceded 9 goals but more importantly we kicked the 2 we needed to win the game.

That was a classic 8 point game and we won it.

Time to be happy and enjoy the bye.

The last thing you see is fresh on your mind - very true. It was a great win, away, against one of the top teams, while we were missing key players. However I think that last quarter will be motivating the players to reach even greater heights. Let's hope so!

Not quite a 9-goal quarter, but bulldogs kicked 13 in a row against us in round 10 in 2009.

Jude was on Game Day yesterday and when asked what were 3 things he learnt, he said:

                            1. It was very hard to stop a team when they were on a run of goals;
                            2. Bombers were a top 4 team; and
                            3. Buy lots of Billy Ray CD's. I couldn't remember the third one so made it up.
Nothing like a good light bulb moment.

To some level I can understand the feelings of negativety arising from that last quarter. From a Sydney Swan fans point of view it was one of the hardest 30 minutes you could imagine, not at all enjoyable.

                              But we won!
-Only the second away win against Essendon in nearly a quarter of a century.
-Breaking a worrying Melbourne hoodoo after four straight losses to Richmond (2011), Hawthorn (2011 semi final), Richmond and St Kilda
-Showing great depth, no Goodes, McGlynn, Parker, Rohan, and Hanners (for the last quarter).
-Playing akin to a genuine Premiership contender for the first 2 1/2 quarters.
-Beating away from a home a very good side who had only lost one prior game at Docklands out of thirteen since James Hird took over the coaching.
-And winning an " 8 point" game in the context of a top four finish.

No, not a case of the glass being HALF full, but TOTALLY full.
