ARL commissioned for AFL stoush
Sounds like Leichhardt Council is the place to be tonight.Comment

Does anyone know what the outcome of last night's Leichhardt Council meeting was? I looked in the SMH this morning but couldn't seem to find anything.Comment

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

I did like the subtle positioning of referring to NRL "clubs" and an AFL "franchise" in the same sentence.
It's a nice bit of scare mongering, many a year ago I used to head over to Birchgrove Oval for a kick with a friend who lived around the corner from it- I'm not sure of the state of it now, but back then it wasn't really maintained in great condition. If it truly means that much to Rugby League then they weren't really putting their money where their mouth is (a decade ago they weren't, at least).Comment

I will lobby for AFL to be played there as it has been unofficially for a long time. There is a very big support for AFL in this area even though most still follow the NRL Tigers as well. They mostly support the Swans and believe both codes can coexist. Unlike the NRL who are @@@@ting themselves instead of joining with the AFL to promote a great sporting market!Comment

While on 'raiding the Cradle of League' have you notices that not one thing was said about soccer which has been played at that ground I believe. speaking of Soccer, I was talking to a couple the other night who's son plays soccer. He is a junior and they pay $5,000/season for him to play. This is a rip off! I don't know any Junior AFL Club who charges anything like that amount. The other thing is that unlike Junior AFL players the Junior Soccer player also has to purchase their own jumper. In Afl the team provides the jumper in all leagues. If a player wishes to buy a jumper they can but it is not essential. I think the AFL should promote the difference in cost in playing Junior AFL to Junior Soccer.
While on Soccer a player told me he was drafted a few years ago by Sydney United and wanted to play big league soccer. He comes from a poorer family so didn't have much money. At the time he told me this he was playing minor league kicking up to 6 goals/match. Sydney wanted $12,000 to draft him. That seems absurd to me, no wonder we can't get a world class soccer team!Comment

The report I saw said the number of local junior player figures the AFL had put up had been questioned and needed to be verified.Comment

But what really got me was the $5,000/year for a kid to play. How much do parents pay for their kids to play Aussie Rules? When I was a kid the team provided everything except Boots, Socks & Shorts. The parents also paid an insurance and registration fee and that was it!Comment

You have to give it to the guy he is really brilliant and doesn't mind telling us so too. I love how he praises the AFL and at the same time admonishes NRL and ARU. All because of the Junior development programs or lack thereof. He is right though, the amount of money spent on the top flight AFL Football compared to Development programs and Grass roots Footy is piddling. The latter receive the greater chunk of the pie and that is how it should be, whereas in the other two sports it is the top one percent that receive at least 70% of the funds.Comment
