quite true. it's a tricky equation of expenses, investment and also attempting to acheive some degree of equity in standard of living from city to city. complicated by the fact that any players earnings in two years time is very hard to predict.

Its true that realizing an asset such as a house may result in a profit. This raises an interesting point in that a 2006 behavioural study within the AFL (a snapshot of club officials, coaches, recruitment staff, players at different levels, AFL officials) mentioned an average AFL player's career was 2.9 years. Those states with less AFL clubs would offer less opportunity to those players wanting to extend their careers and therefore enhancing the need to move interstate. Clearly, if you are a Victorian based player you have more opportunity to remain within your home city and therefore hold onto your place of residence (assuming that you have bought). The statement that a Swan's player will get the profit on the way out in selling a house asset is naive. In fact, most players would probably make a loss assuming the best case scenario that they bought a house day 1 and sold if going interstate on the average AFL career of 2.9 years. It's the elite AFL player that is the minority that has the best chances of making a profit on the purchase of a house assuming they buy early in their career and maintain a career closer to 10 years.

The AFL has to reassess the reasoning behind the COLA. From what I have gathered, it is to assist with the setup costs for players coming from interstate (I don't have figures but one would assume that the majority of AFL players come through VIC, and then from other states with strong Aussie Rules leagues. Very few players come through the NSW system) and also to incentivise coming to NSW.

Now that would be a positive wouldn't it, I couldn't believe how cheap tickets to the footy are in Victoria. And apparently it's cheaper in SA!!

You have to remember in Adelaide they have to spend extra money to get to the airport to welcome visiting teams with that horrid song
