VFL Round 18: Gold Coast Suns Reserves v Sydney Swans Reserves

    NEAFL Round 18
Gold Coast Suns Reserves v Sydney Swans Reserves
    Saturday 28th July 2012 3.00pm
    Metricon Stadium

Note the new starting time of 3.00pm, half an hour earlier than the previously advertised 3.30pm.

The third clash between these two reserves sides this season, with the two previous matches being played in Sydney. The Suns were too strong in Round 3 winning by 36 points but the Swans convincingly turned the tables in Round 10 and triumped by 53 points. The Suns will be keen for the 4 points to maintain their spot in the Top 5 (Northern), while the Swans will be aiming to keep touch with league leaders Queanbeyan and third-place Eastlake in the 3 way race for the minor premiership.

    R3 Reserves 7.13 (55) defeated by Gold Coast 13.13 (91)

The Reserves were hampered by the late withdrawals of Mark Seaby and Jesse White whilst their opponents the Suns had the ability to call on the full complement of 5 on their bench. The Reserves struggled to break down a resolute Suns defensive unit and lost it in the last quarter when Josh Fraser booted 4 of his 5 goals.

Goals: Walsh 2, Potter, McNeil, Lycakis, Jack, Gordon
Best: Heath, Walsh, Lycakis, Moore, Jack

    R10 Reserves 16.13 (109) defeated Gold Coast 8.8 (56) @ Blacktown International Sports Park
In the wet and damp conditions out west, the talls Mark Seaby (in the ruck) and Matthew Spangher (at CHF) dominated for the Swans as they romped to a comfortable 9 goal win over the Suns. The physicality and pressure of the home team was too much for Gold Coast whose sloppiness proved costly as they could only manage 3 goals to 3 quarter time.

Goals: Spangher 4, Morton 3, Everitt 2, Seaby 2, Moody, Cunningham, Mitchell, White, Walsh
Best: Seaby, Spangher, Biggs, Everitt, Moore, Davis

    2011
    R7 Reserves 18.12 (120) defeated Gold Coast 3.10 (28)

Another relocated wet-weather game to Lakeside Oval saw the Reserves defeat the Suns with surprising ease. Jarred Moore starred in the damp conditions with his grunt work out of the middle while Trent Dennis-Lane destroyed Suns defenders Josh Toy and Harley Bennell with a 7 goal haul.

Goals: Dennis-Lane 7, Johnston 3, Meredith 2, Malceski, McKaigue, Robinson, A.Moody, Bevan, Seaby
Best: Moore, Dennis-Lane, Meredith, White, McNeil, Bevan, Seaby

    R15 Gold Coast 21.15 (141) defeated Reserves 9.8 (62)
A poor showing was exacerbated by a lack of playing numbers after Brett Meredith (injury) Luke Parker and Jarred Moore (emergencies) were withdrawn before the game and Nathan Gordon 'sent off' during it for 2 reportable offences. With a full bench and chock full of listed players, the Suns dominated from start to finish to avenge their Round 7 loss.

Goal Kickers: Everitt 3, White 2, Gordon, Sumner, McNeil, E.Moody
Best Players: Seaby, White, Sumner, McNeil

    Last Round
    Reserves 31.11 (197) defeated Belconnen 10.6 (66) @ Sydney Cricket Ground
The Reserves were in devastating form, bouncing back from their previous week's defeat to the Lions Reserves, to crush former powerhouse Belconnen by 131 points. Thanks to some fantastic conversion in front of the sticks, the Reserves led by 43 points at half time and pulled away convincingly in the premiership quarter with a 12 goals to 2 showing to put the result of the match beyond doubt. Trent Dennis-Lane continued his superb form playing both up forward and in the midfield and finished with 7 goals while Jesse White had his best showing of the season playing as the primary ruckman.

Goals: Dennis-Lane 7, White 6, Lamb 3, Morton 2, Cunningham 2, Gordon 2, Spangher 2, Naismith, Roos, Mitchell, Lynch, Brown, Potter, Broome
Best: Dennis-Lane, White, Parker, Brown, Lamb, Moore

Gold Coast Reserves 15.13 (103) defeated Brisbane Reserves 14.11 (95) @ Metricon Stadium
The Suns trailed the Lions for the majority of the match but by kicking 5 goals in the last 9 minutes they managed to overcome a 18 point three quarter time deficit to secure an upset victory over the top of the table Brisbane outfit. Experienced players such as Sam Iles, Michael Coad and Kyal Horsley led the way for the Suns.

Goals: Gillbee 2, Jolly 2, Ellis 2, Schade, Iles, Horsley, Taylor, Hine, Hickey, Flanagan, Fraser, McQualter
Best: Iles, May, Hine, Coad, Taylor, Horsley

    Team List
    Listed players
    Changes
    In: Everitt (senior demotion)
Out: Tom Mitchell (foot), Trent Dennis-Lane (senior promotion), Tommy Walsh (shoulder), Luke Parker (senior promotion)

Playing as the curtain raiser to the seniors means that the ressies will not have to sacrifice one players as a traveling emergency, although it is quite likely that one player will be sacrificed in the second half. The 4 outs are big omissions as Mitchell, TDL and Parker were amongst the best players last week, and Walsh was BOG a fortnight ago against Brisbane. The reserves will miss TDL in particular who has arguably been our best player over the past month or so. His tackling and pressure along with his goalkicking potency will be hard to replace.

    Academy Players/Topups
    Changes
In: Davis, Kilpatrick, Plug, Roberts, Wray
Out: Lewis Broome, David Lycakis, Jack McKinlay, Sam Naismith, Dylan Roos

Davis, Roberts and Weir have played in defence while we get a look at another promising ruckman in Tagliabue

    Gold Coast
Gold Coast have had the luxury of resting one of their named senior emergency in Jackson Allen. Iles and Hickey are the two that are playing. All bar Jared Ellis in the starting XVIII are listed players, and there are some experienced names in McQualter, Iles, Horsley, Coad, Fraser and Aaron Hall.

Iles and Horsley in particular are unlucky to be omitted from their senior team after performing well at both reserves and seniors levels over the course of the season.

    Summary
It will be a tough assignment for the young Swans, conceding a disadvantage having 3 fewer listed players and also having to face the Suns away. The tall timber in the Suns' forward line looms as a potential headache for the undersized Swans defence but they did overcome a similar issue when they travelled to Brisbane in Round 8 and came away with a fantastic victory. Much will depend on the midfield battle which will go a long way to restricting the impact of those talls. Moore, McNeil, Cunningham, Meredith and Gordon up against Horsley, McQualter, Jolly, Iles and Magin.

I wish I could see this match. If this was SANFL would be able to stream it. I hope there is some form of streaming Audio for the game. I love watching the young blokes going around as they are the future and it gives us an idea where we will be in a couple of years. I also love the excitement they all show. Thanks Ugg for another wonderful preview.
