Swans & Gaints lose stand alone first round game and other 2013 fixture discussion

I thought the idea of the Swans & Gaints having the first game of the year - stand alone - was a great idea. It let the whole Sydney market know that AFL had began.

Now the AFL is going for a split round with Adel v Ess first.

The idea was good in theory, but the lopsided nature of the contest made it a bit of a let-down for a season opener. It also had a lot of criticism in the Melbourne press (perhaps justifiably).

Yeah I actually don't mind losing the stand-alone until the Giants are more competitive. I thought it was a bit of a let down this year. For me I actually didn't think it was a great advert for the game with the result being so predetermined.... Others might disagree.

I just hope we play round one at the SCG so we can unfurl the flag at the start of the season and not wait till round two like we had to in 2006.
A win would be nice this time also...

I agree. Geelong unfurled their 2011 flag in round 4 and it seemed a bit strange. Round 1 is always best for these types of occasions.

I actually find the unfurling of the flag the next year a bit weird. It's six months after the grand final and it feels too long ago.

Has anyone else noticed that the Premiership Cup says "Won By" in small writing in the middle of the cup? I would presume that "Sydney Swans" will eventually be etched into the cup. In fact I'm surprised that they don't have an etcher waiting in the wings to etch the Premier's name into it if not on the day, then by now already.

The SCG is usually not available for round 1, which is why we seem to play away so often in the first round.

Round 1 is Easter which would not be good for a crowd in Sydney, I would hope that the flag is unfurled round 2.

                    They always do that.

From memory in 2005, the cup had already done a mini tour of nsw and collected a ding in deniliquin before the clubs name was engraved.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Gotta love Friday nights at home. Geelong and Carlton in 2013 is a great result.

Agreed, although hawks at anz sucks. Why wouldn't you want to recreate the atmosphere at the the last scg cracker.

Very stupid, rated as one if the best games of h&a season 2012. So they move it to anz.

Two Friday night games at the SCG for us. Not happy.
