Oh well, let's wait & see.Comment

Draft selections in the year of winning a premiership tend to be duds, which sucks.
Oh wait it doesn't! Yay premiers!!!!!!
I like the look of the first 3 picks and I'm okay with Dick.Comment

I'm sure I read somewhere yesterday that Kinnear said that he thought the draft was pretty shallow, especially on key position players. Might explain our interesting selections.
I view every draft the same... whether they say its a deep draft, a shallow draft, a whatever draft. It's all about getting lucky, no matter what number the pick. Look at AJ as the perfect example (and there are so so many going back). This is what the club said about Parker and Johnson when we got them in 2010:
Selection No.40: Luke Parker (Dandenong Stingrays)
"We were quite surprised Luke was still there at pick 40. He's a genuine leader and that is a pretty important factor. Some of our more established leaders are moving on. Kirky has retired, the two Boltons are getting on. We hope they play a bit more yet but maybe not. We've got to look to replenish the stocks there."
Selection No.57: Alex Johnson (Oakleigh Chargers)
"He can play both forward and back but we are thinking of using him more as a defender because of his leg speed. He is still fairly light, as most 18-year-old players are. Alex's leg speed was definitely his most appealing asset and we are also impressed that he can play at both ends."
And look how they have turned out - especially AJ. From someone we picked up because he has good leg speed, to turn out as a quality young Premiership defender so quickly has been amazing. Moral of the story is, is that the recruiters can be the best in the business (and our ones are right up there), but it all relies on having a bit of luck as well at times."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

I had a little look through the history of Swans draft picks over the last 15 years and on average about 1 in 4 draftees (including rookie and pre-season) turn out to be good senior players. Which makes sense when you think about it. Firstly a squad of 40 provides the base for the best 22 each week, which is roughly in 1 in 2. And then a successful club would hope that a core of good players hold their place in the 22 for an extended which brings success rate to around that 1 in 4 ratio. So it stands to reason that if only 1 of the 4 players drafted last night 'makes it' that's actually right on average. It sounds sad in a way because in my heart I want all of the new recruits to be worldbeaters, but realistically it's not going to happen.Comment

I am sure I heard on some commentary that AJ had been passed over by selectors "because he had flashy boots" and they didn't rate him. I admit that off the field I find him very umm exuberant but as we know he has reverse white line fever and once the ball is bounced he is as cool as they come. Sheeesh you have to be careful with initial impressions!
So maybe the sight of the colourful and awful tatt on Membrey's shoulder put the other recruiters off? Holy Moley I just took a look at the kid in action on swanstv, he is Plugger/Baz in build, what a unit, he looks very strong too - match him with Peb and his aerobics should work out just fine
As for the mature age recruit Towers - wasn't Kirky the same age? He did ok. (mature age...mutter mutter ... he may not be a kid, but ....)
And its still 2012. I am really looking forward to seeing what 2013 brings.Last edited by Primmy; 23 November 2012, 09:46 AM.If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

Funny how we all see things differently, I find AJ very warm and engaging off field.
My pet dislike off field, and I know I'm going to cop some abuse for this, is Hannerbery - I find him an obnoxious, arrogant knob. Love him on field, despise him off.Comment
