Yep and I wouldn't care who was playing.

I agree. Peter Fitzsimons has an Arts Degree in Government & Political Science and he certainly isn't what they consider geeky at all. I loathe all this putting people into boxes. Geeks, Jocks etc are American stereotypes that really grate on me. We don't need to copy America on anything, we are an eternally better culture. Why would we want to copy the Western Country with the Most Serial Killers, Most Murders, Most Rapes, Most Organised Crime, Least Democracy, Worst Health Care, Worst Education for non wealthy people and Worst Electoral System/Corporate Funding. I prefer to take everyone as the come and not to label people if I can avoid it. These terms that are used such as Geek and Jock are very derogatory and need to be phased out. There are plenty of AFL players and ex players who have degrees. Our own side boasts quite a few. I would make a guess and say that the majority of AFL players and past players have some sort of qualification, be it a Trade or Degree.

Australia is a lot more Americanised than many give credit for or realise. You're obviously entitled to your opinion but geek must mean something much more hurtful to you than it does to me.

I recently got a distinction in my postgraduate course and I wish I applied myself more so that I could call myself a geek. I'd die for a high distinction.

I guess it just depends on what your definition of a geek is.

If you are a geek and someone calls you a geek, it's a compliment.

If you are not a geek and someone calls you a geek, it's an insult.

                Beware of geeks bearing gifts.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

That may be what you think how much longer can we flog this dead horse for? Once again, in your world things may be very different to mine.

One of my colleagues who is studying to be a doctor just said that if I called him a geek he would be proud. Maybe the geek of whatever generation/psychographic/demographic you are from is a derogatory term, but that is not my world.

I would like to draw a clear distinction between discrimination based on colour, race and sexuality versus how offensive it is to call someone a geek, and the rules by which a geek may or may not be called by fellow geeks or non-geeks.

I think you would have to look pretty hard outside or the school playground to find a place where geeks are discriminated against. In fact school playgrounds are one of the scariest places in the world where children do really awful things to each other.

If you really need to know, I am so far away from the mainstream majority that I find the offense at the way the term geek was used quite interesting. You are entitled to being offended in the context that you thought it was. That is light years away from the context in which I use it, and I am repeating constantly that your perception and my perception of what geek is are worlds apart. I have "geek" colleagues (medical students, nuclear medicine students) and if I had said to them after I had found out they had an awesome result similar to a 98.1 UAI and I said "Damn, what a geek. That's awesome" they would not be offended. They understand the context. They're not sitting behind a computer being upset because they missed the context. And once again, just because you said it on the Internet doesn't make it any more special than when you say it to yourself. The Internet is one of the pure democracies/anarchies because anyone can participate and have their voice. Whatever issues you have with my context are your own and you can deal with them in your own cyberspace. The only reason I am even responding is because I like this forum and participating in swans stuff.

I've always thought of it as a playful term, certainly not a nasty one.
