Ok. Have held off long enough

Listening to hawthorn people like Leigh Matthew and Brereton complaining about short week etc as excuses.

Not enough has been made of the Grand Final umpiring. It is diabolical. Have now watched the last quarter 20 times. It just gets more and more infuriating. If you listen to the MMM commentary it drives you even crazier. Mitchell and Hodge get soft ones we cannot buy one

Needed to get that off my chest

I don't normally buy into the complaining about umpiring decisions. We're all one eyed and miss many that go against the opposition too. But there is no doubt that this GF victory was achieved with very little assistance from umpiring decisions. We did get a couple of reasonably favourable ones, but they were far outweighed by others that went against us.

One of my favourites is a contest between Hodge and Jack just on the outskirts of our forward line, near the boundary, in the final quarter. There was possibly a slight brush of Jack's neck early in the contest and the commentators conclude "no, there was no free there" - fair enough. But they ignore the fact that Hodge lands up on top of Jack with his foreman firmly planted across Jack's face. Moments later there is another contest between the two in the same spot, with a similarly light brush of Hodge's neck by Jack. Defintely a free!!! (And it was paid.)

And I love the whinging by Hawks fans about the 50m penalty against Mitchell late in the 3rd quarter, from which McVeigh scored. Very tough! Was just careless, not deliberate, yada yada yada. But not a peep out of them against a much tougher one against Pyke for kicking the ball away before he could possibly have realised an exceedingly crap free had been paid against Smith for HTB when he'd had zero prior opportunity. That gave the Hawks an almost identical scoring opportunity to the one that McVeigh nailed. They just didn't convert it.

Couldn't give a toss what Hawthorn supporters say. The Premiership Cup has our name on it and no amount of whinging changes that.
..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

Agree about the umpiring (yes good to get it off our chest) but winners can laugh. If we'd got beat we would be fuming about the umpiring but it seems we're laughing aren't we?

This really was an inspiring premiership given Ted and Mummy went into the game on one leg and Goodes was on one leg from early in the 2nd quarter, and we beat the umpires too!

          Laughing laughing :-)

            Yep.

Those offering excuses for Hawthorn are just trying to placate their congregation.

              2 issues,
The Hawks whinging is, as the laughingnome says, for internal consumption. The preasure caused by repeatedly falling short since '08 must be mounting on their coaches etc.
As for the umpires, without going into individual decisions, a 2:1 free kick count is patently ridiculous at any time, let alone in a grand final. Can you imagine the squeels of outrage if the free kick count was the other way around?

I actually love the Hawthorn whinging. Just infuriated at the umpiring. Especially as they get so many soft ones

The whinging from some is pathetic. However, a quick reminder of the free kick count and what a great kick for goal Franklin is, and they shut up pretty quick.

The fact we had a few guys on one leg and still kicked the last 4 goals of the game while not getting any assistance from the officials means any whinging is just that, a whinge. I would hope if the result was reversed that as a supporter base we'd show a lot more dignity than the Hawthorn supporters are apparently showing.

The game could have gone either way and if Hawthorn had got up in those final minutes they would have been deserved premiers.

Al Clarkson said after the game: "You've got to take your chances." The Swans did, Hawthorn didn't.

                          Maybe they got bronchitis?

I couldn't really give a toss about what Hawthorn people have to say. Last I checked, we won.

The game did not go to script - we were meant to have sustained a brave loss - the umps did not wish to be blamed for the problem - hence their usual role - Hawks needed every chance - and they missed it. So happy!
