    Rookie Promotion

If a Rampe or Lloyd continued to play well do we have the ability to promote one on to the list or would someone else have to be moved to the long term injury list to allow this?

    Thanks,

      Thanks,
It's NSW. I'm sure that can be arranged.

Normally you have to wait for an injured player be set aside.

I thought the rule changed last year where clubs can now elevate a rookie after Round 11 regardless of long term injury situations.

We have 2 players less on the primary list than some teams and for that reason i believe we are able to promote 2 rookies when needed.

Nah. I just have to work long hours so I can afford to pay the rent on my Sydney flat. Some progress though - I am now at the bus stop.

Rohan should be in the long term injury list and we should have an opening

Now that I am home and have my feet up, my answer is...I don't know! Not for sure, anyway.

I believe Mark is almost certainly correct. In past years clubs without a full list of 40 senior players (including outside vets) have been permitted to nominate rookies eligible to play senior footy. Now that the outside vet designation has been abolished, there is no reason to believe that a club with fewer than 40 senior players can't still nominate rookies.

I am curious why the Swans have so rarely used this option. The last Swan I can recall being nominated pre-season as a designated rookie was Paul Bevan, all the way back in 2004. The reason might have something to do with the salary cap. Once a rookie is designated as a senior player for the season, at least part of his salary has to count in the cap. I have the figure 50% stuck in my brain somewhere, but it could be the whole lot. I believe the answer is somewhere in the CBA, in case anyone can be bothered tracking a copy down. If a rookie is so designated at the start of the season, whatever proportion of his salary counts in the cap is there for the whole year.

In contrast, if a rookie is elevated to cover an injured player, he will only count towards the cap while he remains on the senior list. Once the injured player returns, the rookie's salary no longer counts in the cap. So a club that is close to the limit of its cap might be wary about promoting a rookie right at the start of the year. Bear in mind that no club knows exactly what its TPP will be at the start of the year, because performance elements of contracts and injuries can impact it. Clubs have to leave some leeway.

Last year the Swans chose to put Alex Brown on the LTI at the start of the year to allow them to play Cunningham in round 1, despite the fact we only had 38 senior players and hence room on the list.

As Aaron has pointed out, the club almost certainly has the option of putting Rohan on the LTI now if they want to have Rampe (or Lloyd) available to play the early rounds.

Thanks very much liz. I find this stuff very confusing and the AFL website of little help. Hopefully we'll see a new face or two in round one.
