Robbo on AFL360 just backed up Brereton by saying that what Goodsey did wasn't acceptable and that he's got 'form'. Then 30 seconds later said it was ok for two players (Redden and Tuck) to hit each other behind play.

    Robbo you are a dickead.

Was Goodes expected to demonstrate his "courage" by diving head first onto the ball, thereby taking out Gibson's leg at the same time and with far more potential to cause injury. He had other options, like not contesting the ball, or maybe bumping, but none of those would have demonstrated he had the courage to put his head over the ball in these specific circumstances. The change to the rules (or is that just a change to the interpretion of the rules? I lose track...) this year is meant to actively discourage players from diving onto the ball.

I like Dermie but he's got this one totally wrong and made very nasty insinuation against a very fine footballer and person.

BTW did some research on Dermie's tribunal record - it's tough to find the exact stats but it appears that he was reported 16 times for 10 guilty verdicts, versus Goodesy 4 guilty verdicts from 5 appearances - now which one looks like they've had the benefit of "leniency" from those figures?

The problem with Dermie is that he takes pride in being a dirty player. He's always bragging about the cheap shots he's taken at players and wears it like a badge of honour. He's and intelligent observer of the game, but he's got some strange ideas about courage.

Personally to me it looked like he was going to slide in (As he has probably done since a teenager) and then thought, hold on I cannot do that anymore and made a split second decision to try and kick the ball.

No, Ben Cousins is the AFL version of Andrew Johns. Dermie is just a naughty little boy in comparison.

When you look at the incident, especially at normal speed, it's hard to see what else could have evolved. The only way to avoid a clash of some sort was for either Goodes, Gibson, or both to pull out of the contest. If Gibson is a millisecond faster, it would look like Gibson taking out Goodes' legs. You can't go lower than your opponent in those situations, so you either try to make contact with the ball with your foot or pull out of the contest. I suppose the suggestion is that Goodes lets Gibson get possession and then tries to tackle him. I am all for protecting the players from injury as much as possible, but it just cannot be done in this game without it turning into a farce.

Players are up in arms about the Kelly bump. To me, the MRP was right, but if the players want to let that go, I'm okay with it. Last week it was contact in the marking contest that was under scrutiny. I think the adjudication of the game is in a serious state of disarray at the moment. Much more serious that the plight of the MFC or drugs.

I'm at the point where I'm probably going to boycott AFL360 because of this idiot. He does nothing but shout this year and tries to be provocative all the time. It's a shame because Gerard actually provides intelligent and balanced commentary.

Maybe Gerard Healy saw Robbo out the corner of his eye when he made his on air gaffe on the weekend.

                        So many concerns here.

Firstly, Brereton calling someone a serial offender? Does he not remember his own career? Brereton questioning someone's courage? Stomping on someone's head when he's lying face down on the ground is brave? Did Brereton not see last year's Grand Final when Goodesy played at least 1/2 the game on one leg, kicked a vital goal in the last quarter and in one passage of play in that quarter, fairly put two burly Hawks on their backsides? That game defined Goodesy's career - is it possible that Brereton is still a little shirty that Goodesy and the rest of our courageous team took the Cup from his precious Hawks and is using this "issue" to get a bit of revenge?

Secondly, when did guys like Robbo, Craig Hutchinson, Caroline Wilson, Mark Fine and many other "football journos" become celebrities? Why do they feel the need to make news instead of just reporting it? What gives them the right to sit back and make serious allegations about footballers courage and ethics? I listened to Mark Fine on SEN the other night and he mercilessly attacked a Bulldogs footballer, very pointedly questioning the "severity" of injuries that had kept the player out the team for extended periods of time. A couple of nights later he even bagged players from his own team! The jumper worn by St.Kilda players against Carlton last Monday night had the name of every player who's ever represented the Saints on it. Fine reckoned that the current players should refuse to wear it because it would include names of players that he considered unworthy of that honour. And he named 3 of them! He joked about 3 guys who'd played for the team he supports! They probably only played a handful of games each but they might be very proud that they played AFL football at all.

Thirdly, I'm concerned that the bucketing some players get from football journos may lead to something tragic like what happened to the English nurse who felt humiliated after a prank from a radio station. While many players such as Goodesy would have the maturity and experience to dismiss savage criticism, many players would not. Just because someone is talented enough to play footy at an elite level doesn't mean they have the mental and emotional capacity to cope with the close scrutiny of their behaviour that AFL football involves.

And have you ever seen the reaction of these football journos when someone has the audacity to criticise them? The indignation! Robbo, Wilson and Fine are especially sensitive to criticism - pity they don't care as much about the feelings of others.
