VFL Round 10: Ainslie Tricolours v Sydney Swans Reserves

    The Long and Winding Road

    NEAFL Round 10
Ainslie Tricolours v Sydney Swans Reserves
    Saturday 25th May 2013 2.00pm
    Ainslie Oval

The Swans dispatched last year's premiers in style to sit one game and (a lot of) percentage clear of the Tigers on top of the NEAFL Eastern Conference table. They hope to do deliver a similar result when they face Queanbeyan's predecessor Ainslie, who've had an up and down season thus far. The Tricolours delivered a thrashing of their own to Queanbeyan only 2 weeks ago but fell back to earth with a thud when they were unexpectedly but comprehensively defeated by bottom placed club Sydney Uni.

    Past Meetings
    2012
    R4 Ainslie 17.9 (111) defeated Reserves 12.13 (85) @ Ainslie Oval

The Reserves jumped off to a good start and a mini-break on the Tricolours only for their forwards' accurate kicking brought them back into the match and eventually into the lead. The loss of Brett Meredith and Jordan Lockyer to injuries hurt the balance of the side and the margin proved too big to reel back in. Jack Lynch showed he was as adept up forward as he was in defence with a decent 4 goal return while Tommy Walsh won plaudits for his engaging battle with ex-Crow Ken McGregor at CHB. Mike Pyke rucked for most of the day and when he went for a rest in the last quarter he managed to hang onto 5 contested marks in the F50 in the last quarter, converting 2 of them.

Goals: Lynch 4, Dennis-Lane 2, Pyke 2, Moore, Weir, Lockyer, Lamb
Best: Walsh, Lynch, Moore, Pyke, Jack, Armstrong

QF Reserves 24.17 (161) defeated Ainslie 13.4 (82) @ Blacktown International Sports Park

What looked like being a close game at half time was blown apart by the Swans in the 2nd half. They kicked 14 goals to 6 despite losing Trent Dennis-Lane and Campbell Heath to injury during the game. The ruckwork of Jesse White gave his midfielders including Jarred Moore, Dylan McNeil, Andrejs Everitt and Jed Lamb plenty of first possessions while Tommy Walsh was marking anything and everything coming his way.

    Goals: Everitt 4, Broome 4, Meredith 2, Walsh 2, Dunn 2, Plug 2, Spangher 2, Moore 2, Lamb 2, Lycakis, Roebuck
Best: White, Walsh, Everitt, Moore, McNeil, Lamb

    Last Round
    Reserves 23.13 (151) defeated Queanbeyan 5.8 (38) @ Sydney Cricket Ground

Goals: White 10, Robinson 2, Weir 2, Jaffer-Williams 2, Marsh, Dunn, Lloyd, Gilbert, Mitchell, Wray, Lamb
Best: White, Mitchell, Lloyd, Brown, Hadden, Weir

    Sydney Uni 17.9 (111) defated Ainslie 9.15 (69) @ No 1 Oval

    Goals: Bennett 3, M.Crook 2, Birch 2, Gourlay, Vandenberg
Best: Hirst, Barrie, Highfield, Harris, Horner, Gourlay

    Team List
    Listed players
    Changes
In: Membrey (hamstring), Walsh (seniors), Dick (hamstring)
Out: Jed LAMB (seniors), Jesse WHITE (???)

White is an unexplained absence, this usually is due to an injury that has occurred during the training sessions midweek. It means that the Swans will draft in a topup to ruck (see below), as they did two weeks ago with Wills Brassil when White was called up to replace the injured Mumford against Hawthorn.

The Membrey and Walsh inclusions give their forward line a semblance of structure, not that the team struggled to kick goals last week - they kicked 23 goals. Dick has played in defence, usually on a tall. Lamb's promotion also opens up a spot in the midfield, will they give this opportunity to a youngster like Jack or Biggs or will they charge a more experienced player in Towers or Armstrong with on-ball duties in a bid to enhance their chances of a senior call up.

    Academy Players/Topups
    In: Roebuck, Sands
    Out: Mitch CRAWFORD, Dean GILBERT

Weir played a great role as the stand in full forward and was rewarded with 2 goals. He may move back to his usual spot in the backline but there's still a place up forward if Crouch decides to leave him there. Roebuck played 3 games as a topup last year while Sands is a promising tall originally from Woolgoolga, has played as a topup for the Suns Reserves but has been plying his trade with Western Suburbs in the Sydney AFL this year and won the Rising Star Award in Round 2. My guess is that he will be the main ruckman for this game, with assistance from Walsh, Brown and Richards.

Thanks Ugg. It looks like they have taken Jesse to Melbourne. I wonder if Mummy is not fit or if we are going to play an extra tall to exploit their lack of real height in the forward line. Jesse can also play back as well so it gives us an extra edge if they decide to play an extra tall forward at the last minute from their VFL Squad.

Interesting game this, last week Tri-colours were pretty ordinary but from all reports Uni played really well. they might be making a late run for the top five. Tri-colours are less consistent than a federal politician at the moment but their on week is this week so we had better be wary.

Hasn't Mitchell gone to Melbourne too?

Excellent work as usual, Ugg. If you can work in a 'Dig a Pony' reference that would be very impressive.

I don't see why they would take White to Melbourne, and it would also explain why he was omitted from the emergencies list after being there the whole season (except for the Hawks game which of course he played in)

I can confirm mitchell and Armstrong are on the early flight up to canberra as both are awaiting the flight at the virgin lounge first time ive seen mitchell up close this year - he has a good physical size about him now!

Spoke to the Swans and the only change from Uggs list above is Jesse White in for Bosschieter.

Thanks ugg. I like the look of the best player list - seems as if Xav is coming on in leaps and bounds, so to speak.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Can't really disagree with that best list. A quiet second half from White cost him a place in that best list as he was one of the best in the 1st half.

Tommy Mitchell was outstanding again. Just racks up possessions and uses it well. One of the pleasing things was his aggression around the ball. The coaches would have been please with that aspect of his game.

The other guy was extremely impressed with was Jake Lloyd. When the Swans won the ball across half back and got the sling shot going it was Lloyd more time than not providing that link into the forward line. He's one to watch.

I know Tommy Walsh doesn't have a lot of fans on here and until he performs at AFL level that is understandable. He was outstanding today so he has the ability. Took a stack of strong contested grabs and kicked long and straight. I still hold out hope he can be a decent contributor to the Swans in the coming years.

When I have some time tomorrow I'll make some more observations on some of the performances today.

my guess is that we will continue with Tommy and Incy to become true Senior level players.........

We have shown with Pyke, LRT, Teddy and Grundy that development is extremely valuable with talls

If they are in for the long run........ then so are our development coaches
