Certainly looks like it, can't imagine what else it could be. If so then it is very, very sad, he had been a wonderful player always giving 110%.

Maybe he's announcing that this is to be his last year, he's over his injury, and looking forward to playing against his old team for the last time.

One down, two to go (unless you include Jessie, in which case it's one to go) so we have the space foir this years draft.

If this is the end for Marty, at least he can retire knowing that, like a long line of Swans before him, he will be leaving the game having given all he had and getting the most out of himself. Some players will retire with highlight reels of spectacular marks or goals. Marty's will be filled with match saving tackles.

If Malceski's goal was the moment we knew we had the Grand Final won, Marty's tackle was the moment I first started to believe that we probably would win.

I was just looking through his career stats and it amazed me to realise that before this current injury, he's only missed 2 games since he joined the Swans. A testament to his consistency and durability.

A sad day, Marty would easily be in my top 10 favourite Swans of all time. I have no idea how many times I've seen him come out of nowhere and pull off a great defensive effort.

A premiership player, 222 games- fantastic career. Only racked up 98 of those for Adelaide, so an added bonus!
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Member eFlash: Marty Mattner announces his retirement

Sydney Swans defender Marty Mattner today announced his immediate retirement from AFL football, bringing to an end his 222-game career.

Mattner has been plagued by a degenerative hip condition for a number of years, but it has become more troubling in recent times.

The 30-year-old has not played since being subbed from the round seven match against Hawthorn. He trained on Tuesday but remained hampered by the hip condition.
