Thanks Marty, always one of my favorites. I hope i'm around to see young Oscar pull on the R&W jumper.

Ironically, if ROK saw him streaming downfield miles in the clear on the outer side in the leadup to 'that tackle', we may well be remembering and thanking Marty today for 'that goal' that clinched the 2012 flag....Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment

Thanks Marty - one of my favourite trades the club has pulled off, your tackle on a young Jack Riewoldt was one of my favourite ever, and your effort on Birchall to help close out the GF last year will go down as a fan favourite for a long time. Well played....Comment

I thought he might just call it a day. Noticeably struggling this year due to injury. But thought it would be at seasons end. Was a really great player for us over a long period. When the Crows let him go I thought "You fools, this one is gonna come back and bite you on the bum" and figuratively speaking he did. Played a wonderful game in the semi against Crows and then followed it up with great games in the pen ultimate and ultimate finals.
Brave, fast, furious & hard.

Not only that play in the GF and the tackle against Adelaide, but so many times he made incredible ground to desperately spoil a mark on a forward. I suspect he saved many goals over his 120 games with his spoils and tackles. Ted and Smithy might be miserly on their opponents but so too has Marty. He played the role of the spare man in defence beautifully and many a time he courageously dropped back into the hole to block leading forwards. He did the things that most of us fans miss but his coaches laud. Thanks Marty, you have been one of my favourites since you came to the club.Comment

Made a bit of a dill of myself a work today. Speaking to a fellow Swans supporter about Marty and within earshot of colleagues I said ..."I'll never forget Marty's tackle"
From the looks I got I really should have completed that sentence.
All the best in retirement Marty. Forever a Bloods premiership player...And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

A very sad day for the club, but we should also celebrate a wonderful career, and a great trade for us from Adelaide. I actually did a search on Mattner a minute ago on google and it bought up an old bigfooty forum thread, with plenty of Adelaide fans thinking they had got an excellent deal for Marty. I think we won that deal hands down, and we have first dibs on any father-son selection (does he have any kids - if not get to it Marty, another Mattner in red and white in the future would be an absolute pleasure!)
Has been a brilliant player for our team, an absolute pleasure to watch. The little highlights package shown on the swans website summed up his career wonderfully. But its hard to go past that tackle in last year's grand final - I hope he sees that as his finest moment on the footy field, as I certainly do.
When the ball spread out that way on the field, I almost looked away - I remember I had a chill go down my spine thinking if Birchall gets clear here, they are away and will take it to the other end. But my lack of faith was unpalatable - the brilliance of that tackle from our Mr 1%er in that play epitomises what a wonderful player he has been for the club.
Farewell Marty, and thanks for the wonderful memories - and enjoy telling the story of your tackle that helped your Swans win the flag to your kids and grandkids in times to come - I know its a moment that still brings a broad smile to my face and always will!..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. If this is the end for Marty, at least he can retire knowing that, like a long line of Swans before him, he will be leaving the game having given all he had and getting the most out of himself. Some players will retire with highlight reels of spectacular marks or goals. Marty's will be filled with match saving tackles.
If Malceski's goal was the moment we knew we had the Grand Final won, Marty's tackle was the moment I first started to believe that we probably would win.
Thanks for everything Marty! You've been fantastic for us!Comment
