There are some very astute comments below the attached article from today's 'Roar' re financial aspects of the Franklin contract (present day value etc.) also interesting story re Magic Johnson's 25 year NBA contract. Don't bother to read the article itself, nothing new in it.

The article is just pure tripe but the comments made are indeed astute. This contract is clearly about the present value of money and when the payments are to occur. Really astute contract negotiations by Ireland and so far ahead of the standard contract negotiating plodders in afl club land.

I'm sure Melbourne get a compo pick, restricted/unrestricted doesn't mean the original club doesn't get a compensation pick, it just means that they don't get a chance to match the offer.

If they want to match it, Sydney needs to hold firm. If Hawthorn want to be reactionary, bitter and play hard ball I don't think it will be terrible for us to let them work it out with Buddy. ATM it seems that he is coming to us or going to the draft and likely come to us anyway. If they can change his mind good luck to them.

A lot of it depends on the level of compensation the AFL is willing to provide them. While people have said contrary, I don't think its outrageous for them to get the GAJ 2 first round compo picks given the actual nature of the contract.

Seems the supporters really couldn't give a rats about buddy. Similar response here on Jolly althoughtbthe facts were not known at the time.

It will be interesting to see if increased interest in the Swans because of Buddy (etc) translates into greater membership numbers. One thing is for certain, 55,000 fans in an upgraded SCG will be awesome.

Given the new capacity will be about 47000.....then 55000 will be awesome...

There will literally be 8000 hanging from the rafters.....I'd like to see that.

Now it becomes a case of who blinks first. Hawthorn don't really want to pay him that money - they just want to ensure that they get something for him (and they think they can extract something better than a free agent compo pick, which they would have gotten from the AFL if Franklin left as a free agent). We have to free up cap space, so we might put a combination of Everitt, Lamb and a middling draft pick on the table. What would make it MORE interesting is if Sydney then say "fine, have him" and Franklin decides he wants out (which he is allowed to do). He goes in the preseason draft, GWS can't afford him now that they've commited to Mumford, and we pick him up, again for free, while Hawthorn gets no compensation. That would be pretty cheeky and hilarious.

My best guess is that both clubs will posture and huff and puff for two weeks and then settle on a trade consisting of aforementioned players that we'd have to move on anyway.

Another dastardly scenario I've heard, is that the Hawks could match our offer, then on trade Buddy to GWS for their No.1 pick.

But obviously for that to happen GWS, and Buddy, would have to agree to it...

So it won't happen, but I like the skulduggery of it.

I believe references to court challenges are to do with a person's liberty to live/work where they want. That's why Hawthorn couldn't enforce/make Gary Buckenara stay in Melbourne to finish his contract when he wanted to go home in the late 80s? My contract law history is a bit hazy though so I might be wrong. (Buckenara incidentally has a role in Swans history briefly too)

I don't follow the NRL at all, nor do I pay much attention to the more tabloid aspects of the press - do NRL players in Sydney live under the same level of off-field scrutiny as AFL players appear to in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth?

Yes, though it similarly depends a lot on the club in question. Todd Carney when he was a part of my club the Roosters was routinely stalked at all hours of the day. To say they were gunning for him is an understatement.

Fame brings an inevitable amount of scrutiny and the NRL media is just as bad as their AFL counterparts.
