This is how I also feel about the Daily Telegraph to be honest. They take the general feeling of the public and turn and twist it around to suit the zeitgeist and to fan the flames of unhappiness. It has been quite confronting the reaction from the clubs and supporters, their jealousy has blinded them.

Whilst I'm a bit nervous about the length of contract and the dollars, I think this whole trade for Buddy shows what a marvellously professional club we are. Congratulations to all involved for a brilliant manouvre that blind sided everyone. I think it's that which has made the Melbourne media and clubs blow gaskets.

I would also like to congratulate the Hawthorn FC and its key people for conducting themselves in a dignified manner in the face of losing a sunning champion of their club to close rival - well done. Their supporters also have been on the whole quite calm about events, unlike the rabid Adelaide Cows trash did with Tippett.

So now it's up to Buddy to support the faith we have invested in him, should be an exciting ride!!

Anyone with a calculator can work out that the cap is going up minimum 40% probably closer to 100%. By the end half of his contract, Buddy will be getting similar money to what Mumford is getting paid now in real terms

Just some thoughts on the crackers Keenan article yesterday (if not previously covered in this forum ). He states that they is no way Franklin will last nine years because his shoulders are already gone and he cannot mark overhead. This is the first I have heard of this. Has anyone else heard this injury from a different source?

That has been around since about 2009, he certainly hasnt marked overhead much for at least a couple of seasons. He has seemed to have strapped shoulders as well on and off for at least a couple of years.

NEVER take seriously ANYTHING Crackers says. He doesn't have a clue. Why he has any place in the media is beyond me. Overhead marking has always been a relative weakness in Franklin's game, more than compensated by his freakish talents in other areas.

The AFL seems to think that the Swans would obliged to pay Franklin regardless of the circumstances of his playing status, injury, retirement or otherwise. This appears to contradict what Liam Pickering said earlier in the week when he said that if Franklin retires, he doesn't get paid. I wonder what's up.

This got me thinking about a variety of circumstances where a player has his career unfortunately interrupted. I was wondering if Port had to pay John McCarthy's estate for the remainder of his contract and if it had to be included in their cap. What about players that just decide to break their contract because they are sick of football. What about a serious illness that forces a player from playing on medical advice? What if this happened to GAJ? Would GC still have to pay him out?

Suppose Buddy committed a crime and went to prison for the next 10 years. It is possible that some situation could arise where he may never play a game again. Could the Swans be saddled with a $10 mil. payment and perhaps an equal loss in COLA allowance over the next 10 years? It would almost certainly mean the demise of the club. Is this the risk the AFL would ask the club to assume?

I think if extenuating circumstances prevented him ever playing a game for us it would all be made null and void. Having heard Gil Mclachlan on 3 radio stations this evening its not that we would have to continue paying Buddy if he retires or gets injured we wont have to at all BUT the payments he would have received still count against the TPP, so we would save the money but not be able to use it towards others salaries until the 9 year deal finishes. And yes it all seems exact opposite of what Pickering was peddling late last week.

EDIT-Even if he just decides to retire we will be held to the contract, the AFL will make sure even if we arent paying Buddy anymore that we have this locked into the TPP for 9 years, apparently this is too make sure there isnt a flood of non genuine contract offers, which i guess is fair enough.
