    Tom Derickx joins the Swans

Swans grab unwanted Tiger ruckman - AFL.com.au

I am sure I will not be the only person underwhelmed by this signing.

Hopefully another nugget in the rejects that we seem to uncover but still hoping we draft Rory Lobb with our first pick. Perhaps this is to throw GWS off the scent with Lobb

Looking at the video, there were lots of dropped marks and fumbling all around. Campbell Brown dropped a sitter and even Harbrow was fumbling the ball. Everyone looked spent. It was quite an incredible loss by the Tigs.

This signing is for emergency relief only. We have a stop gap for our stop gap....

I'm also not entirely convinced Pyke can carry the load of being a number 1 ruckman for the full season, clearly I hope I am wrong here.

Unless the Swans are absolutely convinced of this blokes potential or are very confident of Naismith stepping up I would still like us to draft Lobb as our number 1 pick. That gives us two potential 10 year ruckmen who can share the load accordingly.

I'd like us to have genuine cover at Ruck. We only need to pick one in our 22 but we need a good two on our list to be rotated and rested throughout the season. Imagine what Sandilands will do to this bloke in a big match.

Was that the match that Roosy reckons he saw the the worst 50 seconds of football in his life?

Why dont people everpost news into the appropriate existing thread?

Is this the second or third independent Derick-X thread to start since he was recruited?

I agree, a Richmond reject is not a recruit I'm getting excited about.

This guy has had 3 years at the lowly Tigers for 2 games.

I wouldn't expect anyone to be overly excited by him, if he was anything to be excited about then he would have been traded or snapped up before.
He is insurance and nothing more, a big man in the prime age bracket who will happily play in the ressies but is at least able to compete if the worst happens and Pyke goes down.

Does this signing now mean we have 4 picks in the NAB AFL draft?

This is an odd pick, I do not think we are in the business of picking up players to rot in the twos. I suspect there is something that Taubert and the coaching panel see in this bloke, even if it is just a glimmer of potential. Ruckman can be late bloomers so I am happy to trust the club's judgement on this one.,

I don't see this in any way as a solution to Mumford leaving - if he is nothing better than a reserve grader then that is not good enough as a replacement. If we do not recruit a ruckman one of our 4 remaining picks then Ruck will be a potential Achilles heal for us in 2014.

Remember what happened last time we picked up one of Richmond's discards (although the situation was slightly different, I'm referring to Morton; just so we're all on the same page)?

Someone who couldn't dislodge 87 year old VFL prodigy Orren Stephenson from the coveted position of 3rd string Tiger Ruckman is not someone I'm getting too excited about.

                              Derickx becomes a Swan - sydneyswans.com.au

                              he doesnt look that bad

lets see in the off season NAB cup etc as he is here for a purpose ie he plays if we suffer injuries to our top ruckmen otherwise he is a low cost acquisition for our list and he has the all the opportunity to contend for a spot

ps strangely it saids he only played 2 afl games for the tiges but on the video he was playing against melb, GC, North and the pies..........unless some where NAB cup ?

Sounds like a low risk, low cost insurance policy. Quite likely to be on a one year contract at close to minimum wage. Tom gets the chance to prove he's worth sticking with, and provides a strong bodied back-up just in case. Means that they don't have to count on Tippett playing extensively in the ruck if Pyke does get injured, and reduces the reliance on LRT in that role too, given he is also our number on back-up tall defender with AJ on the comeback from long term injury.

It's said to be a shallow draft, so he also occupies a list spot for a year. If he doesn't show much, or if Naismith comes on quickly, his spot can be replaced in next year's draft if it looks to be a bit deeper.

Sounds like a no lose solution.
