    Swanettes recalled

Rejoicing at the demise of the Raiderettes, all in the name of women's sports

"Fleta Page rejoiced at news of the potential demise of the Raiderettes, because you see, back in 1985, she really wanted to be a Swanette when she grew up.

You gave me heart failure GS. It read to me That the Swanettes were recalled!!! Oh the Horror and Embarrassment that would have been.

Just trying to get some readership Primmy. But stay calm - I think they'd all be superannuated out by now so no more high kicks.

I thought the same thing, and hoped that the Swanette's 'ideal' was recalled rather than the actual Swanette's from 20 years ago

I'm glad the AFL has moved on from the attitude that women are only of value to the sport as sexy adornments. Now only if the NRL would follow suit...

At least in America, cheerleaders lead cheers. And they often, at least at college level, are comprised of both males and females.

I think the send up was far more fun. The 'Swanlettes', a group of bearded blokes in the same gear on a podium dancing to YMCA. There is no room in footy for sexism of any kind as getting rid of the Swanettes showed.

My fondest memories of junior footy club trips were to the SCG, armed with stacks of season passes on pink cardboard, standing in front of the Swanettes with our backs to the footy itself. Good times.

I always thought they were the Swanlettes but I can find out because I know someone who knows someone used to be in them.

Except when one of them cartwheeled off their stage one day.
