I thought it was we don't have to pay but it would be counted under the cap

I think ugg is right. Don't have to pay it , but can't spend that money as it is included in the cap. So same difference really.Comment

If so, could we trade Buddy for a late draft pick just to get him off the books, that is, if everyone agrees?Comment

Ugg, correct me if I'm wrong. If you trade a player to another club, for example, we traded Buddy after the 2019 season (6 yrs.), the new club would pick up his contract or a renegotiated contract and we would be off the hook as far as the salary cap is concerned, so long as we did not pay any of his contract at eh new club.
If so, could we trade Buddy for a late draft pick just to get him off the books, that is, if everyone agrees?
Or from Buddy's POV why would he want to renegotiate a contract that guarantees him a metaphorical potload of gold?Comment

Lance is an ideal decoy. Even if he does little else, the opposition is forced to place one of their best defenders on him, just in case he cuts it up big time as he was once capable of doing. The decoy has a place... Even at a high price ..."Lance" is not a dirty wordComment

Theoretically I suppose so, but where are you going to find such a stupid, *ahem* I mean benevolent, club that is prepared to take on such a burdensome commitment. 'Salary dumps' are quite common in the NBA but they involve the club dumping the contract paying the receiving club quite a hefty price in terms of players and/or picks.
Or from Buddy's POV why would he want to renegotiate a contract that guarantees him a metaphorical potload of gold?
The only way I see this deal stopping is Buddy voluntary voiding his contract and asking the AFL to delist him years before the 9 year term expires. This situation has occurred with Geoff Garlett from the Hawks.
Buddy and his management I doubt will ever go down this path!
Maybe in 6 years? time Buddy?s salary will be a ?middle of the road salary? and won?t have a huge impact on the salary cap. If the AFL keep growing the game and keep growing its TV audience, then the salary cap will grow.
Buddy is essential to the growth of the game in Sydney. Buddy dragged the Swans onto page three of the Telegraph by going to the beach. Sydney also wants to know how good a player this beach going, party boy, modelizer is?
If Buddy grows the game in Sydney, the salary caps will increase and he?ll end up paying his own salary.Comment

Also, if Buddy is making so many papers for turning up to the beach, why don't the Swans PR force him to turn up to a few press conferences?Comment

Lets just hope Dustin Fletchers old man had a dalliance with Mrs Franklin 27 years ago. Then we have a chance of getting some value outta Buddy.Comment

Absolutely Ugg. Buddy and his managment have negotiated this deal very well.

I agree in general Matt80, but it will be team success that will grow the business in Sydney.....we are the diehards, but the general pop love getting on a winning bandwagon.

I think there are some other things that can be done:
- The Swans can have a Buddy themed fans day on North Bondi Beach in late November to kick of the next years membership drive.
- If we win the flag we can do a celebration at the Town Hall and then invite the fans down to the Bondi Pavilion to continue the celebrations. Buddy of course will MC the after party celebrations.
- Buddy could start a show in the offseason called ?Buddy?s Bikini Beach (adapted from Poor Man?s Bikini Beach). In this show he will talk to beach goers about sun protection, beach safety, beach attire and then give away some Buddy signed Swans gear.
- Buddy could do his Bronze Medallion and join the cast of Bondi Rescue for the summer. Watch the AFL lap up Buddy on a ?rubber ducky?, performing a surf rescue.
The above ideas are there to attract a new type of fan to the Swans.
I do agree through that if the Swans win games, with Buddy kicking multiple goals then that?s the best PR of all!

Spot on. Thanks Ugg.Comment

Not sure why the Swans don't use Buddy in press conferences. The unique thing about not using Buddy in press conferences is that it also becomes a story........

Ha ha I think you are right, he is hanging off him with his tongue hanging out. As for Buddy's deal, he may not be the best player on the ground in the latter part of his contract but he could be used to assist in the academy or with other up and coming forwards, cold be invaluable for that. Would love to see Jetta get his mojo back and Buddy, Jetta and Rohan tear the opposition apart, with Tippett providing the muscle.Comment
