Glad I had another commitment for the second half ... but the signs were there in the second half of second quarter ... just looked like we thought enough will be enough ... but it wasn't ... a massive failure in recognising that GWS is now a good team ... interesting to compare what GWS got out of Hunt & Mumford compared to Buddy ... it's not all about money ... and at this admittedly very early stage ... the Buddy contract is looking somewhat ridiculous.
So many of our blokes played like it would all be OK in the end ... poor leadership ... poor coaching ... at least on this day.

I agree with the general sentiment of this. It's been ages since the Swans turned up fully tuned up for round 1 and they clearly weren't mentally ready for a battle yesterday. We'll find out over the next few weeks the extent to which GWS have really improved. They've played patches of very good football previously. The difference yesterday was that they were able to keep going for the whole game, and I suspect many of our players were banking on them running out of legs towards the end. It didn't happen.

I don't think leg speed is the issue. I don't think we're any worse off than most teams. Jetta, Rohan, Cunningham are all quick. Shaw and McGlynn are no slouches. Compare our midfield to that of Hawthorn and Freo - they are bigger, slower bodies augmented by a few quick types (one Hill each, Pearce, Smith). It's more about the willingness to run hard. Our midfield is particularly dependent on that, and with Jack out and Hanners well off the pace, it showed. It showed last year too, against the Pies for example, that when the midfield doesn't work hard we look dreadful.

I think the two biggest disappointments for me yesterday were Rohan and Reid, mainly because they've looked so promising in the pre-season. Both are quick and mobile for their size (Rohan for any size) but they never seemed to present into space.

I was most disappointed in our so called young guns.

Reid, Rohan, Jetta, Hanners all massively failed to fire. If these guys don't step up this year then it will be a very long year. All of them need to find the reliability of Smith, Richards, JPK etc.

I think yesterday's game showed exactly why O'Keefe wasn't originally picked. Longmire knew that the Giants were capable of running, running and running some more and thought the balance would be out with O'Keefe in the side. Clearly there was far more wrong yesterday than just O'Keefe but I think it makes nothing yesterday suggested the coaches made a bad call to not initially pick O'Keefe.

Well said DamY. Typical response by the majority of posters here. Hated the game as well, however those who start listing players who should be put out to pasture, sent to an opposition team, taken out the back and shot, etc, etc, are hysterical. Calm down, have a cup of tea and see what the season unveils.

Also would like to add that I hate Dwayne pipe commentating on our games. Still loves questioning any frees we get, and also trying to find ones that don't exist for our opposition. I was hoping they would give him the flick!!

I normally don't like to come on here so soon after a poor game, but we seem to be in relatively good spirits here.
For my two cents, it seemed like a lot of the team, mainly the younger ones, thought all they had to do was turn up. Also why did it seem like only Pyke and Kennedy were the only ones there. Joey always seemed outnumbered at ball ups. Definitely missed Jack there.

Well I said it on Thursday when team announced, we cant expect Pyke to ruck without another
ruckman to help, we have tried it before and LRT aint no ruckman. Pyke was going alright for the first half and then Mummy ran all over him, and missing KJ didn't help. Josh was all alone and when he was shut out of the game we faltered. We were also intimidated by the upstarts from down the road and they played more aggressively than us. A poor start to what appeared as if it was going to be a fine year.

                            Mumford v Franklin - 10% taller, 15% younger, 25% better, 50% cheaper

                              Re the sky is falling....

When do we start getting concerned ? You do realise that since the Adelaide game last year we are eight wins and seven losses, looked beatable against Melbourne and the dogs last year, and we're smashed by those teams in the four. Pre season were smashed by west coast beat Brisbane, many peoples wooden spoon favourites by a few goals, and have now lost badly to the giants.

What would it take for you to be concerned ?

For me the predictability of this result once the rain came was high. But even before that they looked quick and capable of kicking 15 goals against us. That made me worried.

Whilst it is obviously not the reason they won, the Giants fully deserved the victory, during the extended quarter time break my father made the (as it turns out, astute) observation that it was a fantastic turn of events for the Giants as not only could they regroup and calm their nerves a little but it ended up being such a long break that they would probably be fine running out the fourth quarter (which in the end they were).

To me we were complacent going into this game, and I think that GWS smacked us for that complacency and I am not going to read anymore into this game than it being instant karma. I appreciate we had top line players unavailable through injury, but I frankly am of the impression that the Swans viewed this weekend as being about as challenging as next so when working out training programs their early opponents heavily influenced decisions. I wouldn't be surprised if Kizza was only a little sore, as well, and someone has said "no point risking it".
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
