I thought we looked ok in the first QTR and if it stayed fine I think we would have blown them out of the water in the first half.

As the margin closed, most Swan's were looking at each other waiting for someone to 'make it happen'. This was still happening in the last QTR!

We were soft, flat and some of our stars (I'm looking at you Hanner's) were awful. I got the feeling most players were treating the game as an extended pre-season, with the first real game against the pies in 2 weeks.

You have got to give credit to GWS and their young guns. They were super impressive and showed such class to finish out the game so powerfully.

I would hope Horse gave them an absolute rocket!

The other commentators raised the fact that he had sat on that committee! He then answered that the vision of the expansion clubs was that they would use the concessions to acquire a lot of mature players, so you would have a normal looking list!

He is upset that mature players were not recruited and young talent was stockpiled! The reality is that it's been difficult for the expansion clubs to recruit a lot of good mature players, so they have built with youth!

Who needs to see a stand up comedy show? *wipes tears*

Thanks for the read of the well thought out reasoned replies.

For mine, slow start, not hungry enough. A few to look at tape and get a kick up the arse. Coaches to review wet weather tactics. 22 weeks of footy to go. They are going to smash the comp in under 3 years.

We will make the finals without a doubt. The real issue will be whether losses like this will affect the chances of top two.

Calm down and get some perspective
Yep, an awful lot of fair weather fans on this site. I can understand the angst immediately after the game, but two days later - get a grip!

Admittedly we sucked big time but the AFL have created a monster. I hope people enjoy a decade of watching GWS V GCS grand finals. GWS will probably keep the COLA too. At least Eddie will have a new target now.

Is it time to pull out the Buddy parody and remind everyone that the Swans are the glamour club of the AFL and that the GWS represent an obnoxious doorman who won't spoil our 2014 great big party!

Did I read somewhere that GWS has something like 5 or 6 top 10 draft pics in their reserves? I know that players will leave GWS and GCS over the years, but with the trading currency they have now, there is no excuse for either team to not have 5+ years towards the top, and be able to actually improve their list year in year out (unlike normal top teams, who just look to keep it together as well as possible).

As much as I know we need GWS to expand the code in Sydney (or so the AFL says), there is going to be something very artificial feeling about the initial success of them (and to a lesser extent GCS). A part of my cold heart wishes that neither of them win a Premierhip in their first say 10 years, so that at least when they do win one it won't be on the basis of the ladder up given to them by the AFL.

I agree that many of the players deserve to cop some flak but as mentioned previously, after half time Mike Pyke was spent and LRT developed a groin strain and didn't come back on after the 3rd quarter. Surely that contributed somewhat to the poor stats around the stoppages.

I disagree with the comment that too many mids were on the outside waiting for the ball to come out to them. To me it seemed that the Swans insiders spent a lot of time fighting with each other for the ball. So many times Parker and Mitchell and to a lesser extend Kennedy were in a circle around the ball taking it out of each others hands and then which ever one finally ended up with it flicking it out to the waiting opposition. (Slight exaggeration!)

After reading the reports from the Reserves game it makes me wonder if the 'flat' performance from both teams has something to do with mistiming of training and general preparation. If that was so at least we could breathe more easily .......

If you read Hawks fans and other clubs supporters posts, it's all because the players are disgruntled with Buddy and are deliberately under-performing.

I'd like to think you are right bloodsbigot, but I just can't see it. There is absolutely no excuse for the giants.... they have stockpiled a ridiculous amount of talent, with plenty of it just sitting there, never likely to make the 1st team at GWS, but ripe for trading for good draft picks and or good players.

I don't think the Reserves per say put in a 'flat' performance, I just think GWS has a pretty decent looking reserves team, and I think our reserves team looks the weakest it has for quite a while.

As for the theory about the firsts, I do think there maybe some truth to it. It was clear GWS came in with all guns blazing for Rd 1, where I think we thought 'oh well, we can play poorly and win', with an eye on Rd 2 in a couple of weeks as the real start to the season. Bad mistake boys, and that doesn't excuse what was after quarter time a very ordinary performance. My theory might be very wrong if we play as badly against the Pies in a couple of weeks.

I dunno... to me it seems like it takes more than just first round picks and money to get premierships. Heaps of first round picks turn out to be duds.

                              Could be wrong though.

'Giants and Suns are looking scary' has become a cliche which is why I find the opinion so doubtful. It's almost as if nobody is thinking about it anymore and it's all a massive assumption.

                                Macca receives a reprimand

Jarrad McVeigh, Sydney Swans, has been charged with a Level One Striking Offence (80 demerit points, reprimand) for striking Rhys Palmer, GWS Giants, during the second quarter of the Round One match between the Sydney Swans and the GWS Giants played at Spotless Stadium on Saturday March 15, 2014.
In summary, due to a six-year good record, he can accept a reprimand and 45 points towards his future record with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the GWS Giants Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has no existing six-year good record, which reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 45 points towards his future record.
