VFL Round 2: UWS Giants v Sydney Swans Reserves

    NEAFL 2014 Round 2

UWS Giants v Sydney Swans Reserves

Game being streamed live: UWS Giants v Sydney Swans Reserves - LIVE - YouTube

    Sunday 6th April 2014 9.30am
    Spotless Stadium

The Reserves travel to Spotless Stadium for the 2nd time in 3 games, looking to avenge the loss they suffered at the hands of the young Giants in their practice match. They will be buoyed by their excellent showing in Brisbane, easily defeating the reigning NEAFL premiers the Brisbane Lions Reserves by a comfortable 54 points.

The Giants had a tough first up assignment traveling to Darwin to face the dangerous NT Thunder and walked away with a respectable 26 point loss. With further injuries to their senior squad this week, the Giants will field as strong a team as they did 3 weeks ago.

    Team List
    Listed players
    Changes
    In:
    Out: Jeremy LAIDLER (seniors)

The defensive unit excelled last week against the Lions, holding Brisbane goalless in 3 of the 4 quarters. The back six will lose the
    experience of Laidler.

Key inside midfielders Robinson, Lloyd and Marsh all had 30+ possessions and racked up 21 of the Swans' 45 clearances. They will need to repeat that kind of performance against the highly regarded young Giants midfield who were the dominant unit in our last meeting.

Jack hasn't hit the scoreboard in either of the 2 games so far but was still heavily involved in the Swans' attack with 22 touches and 8 inside 50s. Towers also had a strong game as a leading forward, but was inaccurate in only converting 1 of his 4 shots at goal

    Academy Players/Topups
    In: Hadden, Wray
    Out:
    Isaac HEENEY (AIS)

Heeney will be playing for the AIS-AFL Academy against Collingwood's VFL as the curtain raiser for the Hawthorn-Freo game. Hadden and Wray are experienced topups who have contributed significantly in past reserves games.

I have heard a rumour that their back line is non existent

We can put the name Jed Lamb into the GWS side. Missed the senior cut this week, so he'll be hanging with his old mates again. Just like old times.

Isaac Heeney has been given a big wrap by Michael Ablett who is the manager of the AIS Academy Squad. Sounds like a very promising prospect.

How the hell can't Tomlinson get a game in their seniors. Looked to be a star in the making last year, I thought he was Nick Riewaldt like in some of the games I saw.

Think we should make a trade play for him, come to the Swans for more senior game time !

Looks like Lamb finds himself in the same boat this year except GWS have a truck load of high draft picks keeping him out and no retirees on the horizon whose spot he could fill. Hope he enjoys the $ for the next three years.

Quite a star (by ND pick numbers) studded line up for GWS.

Really don't understand the antipathy towards Jed. He received a better offer from GWS, not just in a financial sense, and took it

They've been playing him as a forward, almost exclusively which makes sense given the talent they have in the midfield and not so much depth in that medium forward slot. A lot of talent in the talls as has been highlighted in the media but no so much in the smaller brigade

Unfortunately for Lamb the one other real option Devon Smith is playing pretty well in that role and so he's going to have to wait for his chance

Would he be getting a game in our seniors at the moment?

                  He's named on the bench.

Can't help but feel this acquisition was ill conceived by the Giants...they really don't need him - in any way.
The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.

Agree, I think it was just because they could stuff us around by grabbing a Swans first round draft pick and could get him for nothing in the PSD. They have a heap of players around Lamb's age with at least or more ability. Mumford was a real need, Lamb was just to upset our list.

That we got nothing for Lamb, a first round pick really pisses me off.

GWS will add another three talented ND picks this year, something like picks 3, 19, 22. If you analyse their list I'm not sure what type of kids they need, don't need midfielders, they have more KP players than anyone, more rucks than anyone, even Tomlinson can't get a game! As I said hope Jed enjoys the $.

I think there is antipathy towards Lamb for three reasons:

People on this forum and other areas have been calling him the new Stevie J. He did not show that promise in the first three years of the Swans.

He possesses nice skills, but does not physically go in as hard as other players. Despite a low possession count you can never accuse Rohan of not going in hard and doing his tackling.

He came from a draft which also contained Luke Parker and Alex Johnson. These guys are lower picks than Jed Lamb and have delivered more on-field for the Swans.

I think Jed Lamb is a fine young man of good character, who will come good and have a fine career. We can never forget the leadership, friendship commitment that Jed showed towards Garry Rohan when Garry was struggling. Those two boys have a friendship for life and that we be valuable to both of them for a life time.

Maybe the Giants saw this Leadership quality in Jed and this will be very valuable to the club.

The only antipathy I feel towards him, is that I'm disappointed, like Mummy, we couldn't keep him.
But as an individual. Good luck to him, I hope he goes on to prove the swans were stupid for letting him go.

That was just a practice game. We are, however, fixtures to play the other AFL reserves teams in the league more times than other clubs. We barely play any of the other Queensland based sides. Presumably this is what the four AFL clubs want. But it does make the NEAFL competition less of a genuine league and more of a loose structure to give the AFL reserves sides a chance to train their players in match situations.
