I remember the massive expectation placed on Ted Whitten jnr by the bulldogs faithful, and he just couldn't handle it. He was a reasonable player in his own right, but being the son of Ted it was just expected that he would be as good. Of course he wasn't. Same could be said of Paul Hudson when he arrived at Hawthorn. I remember Richmond supporters deriding David Bourke virtually on masse one day at Etihad, the comment "your not as good as your father" was very common. It really is a tough cross to carry, and from what I've seen there aren't too many of them that make it.

We (meaning the footballing public collective) place so much higher expectation on the son of a former player, and if he happens to be the son of a former superstar, the expectations are multiplied tenfold. These guys are on a hiding to nothing unless they have football ability equal to or better than their famous fathers. Maybe thats why the Jack boys have chosen AFL over Rugby League.

I hope Jackson and all of the Kelly boys make it, not because they are PK's sons but because it is their dream to play in the AFL.
Langford. My god the commentators just want him to be a gun so badly. They ignore the fact that he butchers more possessions than not. May or may not end up a good footballer.

Of course you can just be a high draft pick to have unrealistic expectations placed on you. Like every #1 pick ever, but also, I remember reading an article in the Summer that Paddy Ryder got drafted as the Bombers first rounder and the article compared him to both Polly Farmer and Adam Goodes.

trained with Langa's in his last year with the Hawks when he had to train once a week with Northshore.

Langa's is a champion and just the most humble and genuine man !

Agree his son is a bit behind where the commentators would want him to be..............

Jeremy McGovern made his debute for the West Coast Eagles on the weekend. His father Andrew played a couple years for the Swans in the 90s.

Also in regards to why the isn't in the Murray Bushrangers squad is that he lives in Wagga. There are a couple of Wagga boys in the Bushrangers squad this year but they have moved to Albury to do so.

I've always said thank heavens Pluggers family didn't include boys, that would have been unbearable.

So Kelly has five, 3 boys, and 2 girls, one of whom I remember as being singularly feisty.

The Reid boys, Hanners, Shaw boys, Joey, Sean Dempster, all part of footballing families, none are now playing for fathers clubs, in this selection. All different, most needing to get away from expectations to thrive.

When you start really looking around there are an amazing number of sons playing. I wonder if there is any other sport in the world with the same correlation

I saw that the guys who recruited Dane Swan did so on gut feel. They had remembered that his dad Billy had been a late developer. From memory PKU was as well, being viewed as too small.

Will be an interesting one really. I remember hearing Johnny Murphy on the radio in the 90s say he wouldn't let Marc play footy until he was in his teens to avoid him getting burnt out. Probably the case here as well
You don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby Ziegler

I would LOVE to David Murphy's son, Kane, play for the Swans. He is a little fella though, along the lines of Benny, and went to Adelaide to hone skills etc.. But I think he may not get back here. He was good though.

Calton's Kane Lucas is also the son of our former player Jack (John) Lucas, who didn't play anywhere near enough games for father son eligibility

Young Jackson got in the best for the Rams on the weekend. 7 tackles. Here's hoping.
