The Swans were very creative with the Buddy deal and won.
The Hawks could possibly been more creative with negotiating with Buddy. If the Hawks knew that all roads for Buddy led to Bondi, why did they not propose an arrangement where Buddy could live in Bondi and fly interstate to play for the Hawks on the weekends. He could have trained during the week at a local Eastern Suburbs club like a UTS Bats a UNSW or a Sydney Uni. They could have Video Conferenced him in for team meetings and game reviews. They could have mobilised medical personal in Sydney to make sure his body was in good nick.
In the mid 90s, Chris Langford worked in Sydney, played for the Hawks on the weekend and trained with the North Shore Club during the week.
If the Hawks had offered Buddy a bit less $ 700,000 - $ 800,000 a season, but allowed him to have a Bondi Fly in Fly Out arrangement, then I think he could have been very tempted to continue at the Hawks.
This would breach modern non-negotiable leadership group protocol, but sometimes you need to find creative arrangements with special players. The Swans proposed the most creative arrangement and won."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

As Meg has stated, it?s highly likely that Buddy wanted to move to Sydney during 2013 for personal reasons.
If the fly in fly out method worked for Chris Langford, why could it not work for Buddy?
Buddy may still be a Hawks player if the "Langford Solution" was proposed. I?m sure he would still be an elite player with this arrangement.Comment

As long as we keep delivering on the field, I couldn't give a rat's what anyone says.

Also, Langford retired nearly two decades ago. Things have changed. We did it with Minton-Connell too I think - you just couldn't do it now.Bloods

Agree jono. I find myself questioning whether it's worth trawling thru all the garbage, thread after thread, by those desperate to be heard, just to read stuff worth actually reading.

Note you aren't one of those people, so keep at it!Comment

I'm not convinced a fly in fly out situation would really work in these days of far more professional football."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

Swanpant, in reply to the original intent of this thread ... I hear the same BS when I regularly travel to Melb (and always wear my Swans Premiers cap). At first I tried using the same sound logic as you do. The sad truth is that people will believe what they want to believe and then find selective facts to support it. There is no arguing them out of it. I take it as a backhanded compliment that the Swans are progressively becoming the target of more of this type of stuff ... IMO it means we are increasingly feared as a threat. Never heard this vitriol from the other clubs/supporters when we were the easy-beats.CIA Agent to Policeman: "Have you ever had anti-terrorist training?"
