$300 a week is actually pretty good in a few eastern suburbs that the boys live in like Maroubra and Coogee. That would definitely help them get by.
COLA to be replaced by rent subsidy

Let's face it - earning $300k a year, with very uncertain prospects and you aren't going to be living like a movie star. I think most of the players are pretty shrewd a know they've got to set themselves up for the long term.Comment

Matraville is only 5 minutes drive to Maroubra, meaning the young boys still experience a beach lifestyle. The Golf Courses are good in that area as well, meaning the young blokes can get those handicaps down. There are also some really good fishing spots in that area, that Jeremy Cameron will be having a look at. Cameron must be sick of fishing poisoness fish that you get West of the Harbour Bridge.Comment

Really? My daughter lives in a studio apartment the size of an average dog kennel in Maroubra and pays a lot more than 300 per week.Comment

I used to pay $55 per week for a decent sized room in a share house in Erskineville. I might be dating myself a little... but gosh, when the reflection in the mirror can turn a head like that WHY WOULDN'T YOU DATE YOURSELF?!??!?!?! Hurry up cloning, I say.I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his timeComment

I used to pay $220 a week in a two bedroom apartment in Darling Point. This was a decade ago. It had a great little balcony with some nice harbour views. It was a short walk home from the "Golden Mile".
I then met my wife who lived in Bondi.Comment

I payed $220 for one room and had a flat mate.Comment

I laughed like I was reading The Rosie Project. Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way you'll be a mile away and he'll be shoeless.Comment

I know this has reared it's head again after the Geelong flogging.
But really why??
The COLA is being wiped out. Not going to change now.
And as good as we were, Geelong were bloody hopeless. Worst game I've seen Geelong play for a long time.
And it wasn't our 2 big guns that won the game. They sure helped, but the drive off the back line, and mids killed it.
They mainly consist of recycled players and homegrown.
So why is Jackson jumping up and down about it now?Comment

As Liz pointed out earlier when the topic of COLA becoming $15,000 rental assistance first arose, the $15,000 would be pre tax. So it is likely to end up being closer to $200 per week than $300. Still a very helpful subsidy though.
It would be the same as getting 9.8% COLA for a player on $153,000 and more than COLA for a player on less than that (e.g. a rookie). Obviously it is not an insignificant decrease for those who no longer qualify, but if the cutoff point is $300,000 as reported, this will be a minority of our players.
Why has this emerged again now, even though it is obvious COLA is about to go? Because our wonderful win last Thurs night has got a whole lot of people fearful we might be standing on the podium in late Sept. So they have got the hate mail going that we could only do it because we bought Tippett and Franklin with COLA money. And are therefore undeserving. Disgraceful journalism, shameful behaviour by presidents of other clubs and ignorant, ill-informed commentary on social media by supporters from other clubs.Comment

Hey Ludwig, with two players sharing each of the other 3 bedrooms the Swans could get 6 players into your house. Then they could pool their rental assistance to pay for airfares for training, matches, visits home etc. etc.Comment
