VFL Round 13: Sydney Swans Reserves v UWS Giants

    NEAFL 2014 Round 13

Sydney Swans Reserves v UWS Giants

    Saturday 28th June 2014
    3.30pm
    Sydney Cricket Ground

Note: The new time and venue, 30 mins earlier than the original advertised time of 4pm

These 2 teams are currently the hot favourites for the NEAFL title, with the Queensland AFL sides' reserves teams struggling badly with injury and early season leaders NT Thunder suffering a mid season slump. The Giants inflicted the Swans only defeat of the season in Round 2 which the Swans easily avenged in Round 7 thanks to an outstanding defensive display. The Swans will be slightly weaker this time due to some injuries of their own and the Giants will have the numerical advantage in the number of listed players.

The 2 teams also met in a practice game last week, but both sides chose to rest some players. The Giants were the dominant team in that game and would have won but for some wayward goalkicking.

A Swans win would put them 2 games clear at the top of the ladder and in the box seat to claim the minor premiership but could fall to 2nd if the Giants triumph by roughly 50 points or so.

    Sydney University
    In: Greene, Townsend, Faul
Out: Kristian JAKSCH, Andrew PHILLIPS, Lachie HAYRES

Toby Greene has served his 5 match internal suspension and will add to a strong looking midfield of O'Rourke, Whiley, Barrett, Lamb and Townsend. They lose one ruckman in Phillips but still have 3 in the squad in Giles, Lobb and Downie. McCarthy has generally played in defence this year but as a swingman could be utilised up forward, especially if the Giants find the Swans defence hard to penetrate.

great stuff Ugg. They only have one player more than us from the list so that is ok. We will beat them anyway. I think we played a lot of first up toppies in the practice match from a list I saw. I like the feel of our side and getting plenty back means a lot. Mitchell will tear them to pieces. I hope someone give Toby Greene some sledging. He deserves it and might just do his cruet and get suspended again LOL.

Thanks for the preview and stats, Ugg. Great work.

If Xav doesn't play does that mean it's Allir v Boyd?

Idle curiosity: how did the SUns end up with 0 wins and 42%. It's hard to square that with their improving A team.

Seemed like not a fun game to be at. WE were lucky to lose by just 6 goals.

First half was very even. But the weight of numbers of listed players vs top ups started to tell as the game went on. X and Marsh were both missing, and Rohan and Membrey after half time. Suspect Giants might also have removed an emergency at half time but the differential became too great.

Yes, he played. He's played better but was reasonable at worst. Probably needs another run in the reserves before he starts knocking down the door for senior selection.

I thought some of his kicking was a tad wasteful. Also surprised LRT was best on ground. He was good in the first half mainly against Tom Boyd but looked a little out of touch in the second half

I read on the twitter that Patrick Mitchell was playing in the backline in the 2nd half. How did he go there?

The nicest thing I can say about that is that he probably should stick to the forward line.

Sounds as if we can (and no doubt will) do better.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Some random points re the twos today. Result not that important but very disappointed after my enjoyable foray to Drummoyne a few weeks ago

                              * Anyone saying Membrey is due a call-up to the seniors is seriously delusionsal, he provided very little target and was lazy. He strikes me as a biily big bollocks of the highest level
                              * Patrick Mitchell is not SFL standard let alone NEAFL, happy to place him the experiment gone wrong category
                              * Alliir Alliir had some moments of optimism and is certainly quite an athlete. Good to see him manning up better. Not going to press for selection this season but could come good
                              * Rohan yet again got caught with the ball too often but gutted about his injury which looked serious
                              * Naismith started well and has a great hoof, looks like a good prospect
                              * Nankervis did some good things but faded but who didn't, definitely not worth a call up yet
                              * Mitchell looked well off the pace today
                              * Hewett seems to coming along well
                              * Did Towers play?
                              * LRT and ROK are legends of the club but looked old and slow
                              * There was a young kid who I did not pick up that has one of the most prodigious boots I have seen for a long time and hit some targets from the half back line well into the forward line, would love to know who he was as he always kicked it from the far side of the ground

A bad day at the office which we are all allowed but no-one I saw out their hand up for a senior callup
