Its one thing moving one players at the tail end of their career,a s clubs should (as it looks like we are doing with ROK). Its another thing trading young players with most of their careers in front of them, just because you think you have the next best thing waiting in the wings. Jolly granted is a very good player, but he had genuine reasons to leave. Buchanan, as good as he was, is not of the quality that Mitchell most likely (even he has a risk of not making it too) will be.

I'm all for turning the list over where required, and making sure what happened at the Lions doesn't happen here. But that shouldn't include trading off very good players just because the new play toy in the room might be better. If it involves throwing out a play toy that, whilst being of great service in the past, doesn't really have a future, then so be it. That is footy in the professional era.

We did get a second round for Buchanan. I was surprised that the Lions were so generous. Jolly wanted to go home and we got Jetta out of that. If some of the current players want to leave then we must get a good deal for ourselves. We should also move on players who look like they are waiting to use free agency.

Paul Roos was very proactive in turning over the list after the 2006 Grand Final appearance with a view to building another good side. Jude Bolton was even put up for sale. Roos was most successful in the 2009 trade period where we got Mumford, McGlynn, Kennedy, Reid, Rohan, Jetta. The only downside was Seaby but he did provide some service in a couple of games.

He sold Paul Ince, Andre Shevchenko, Mark Hughes and Lee Sharpe in a two year period. Great Business.

Just to be pedantic - I dont think Shevchenko played for United in the mid 90's lol. Lee Sharpe was injury prone (108 games in 10 years following his United stint) and Sir Fergiescum saw this, and whilst Hughes and Ince played plenty of football at other clubs, they probably didn't reach the same heights as they did at united. What I'm trying to say is, whilst it was astute transfers that paved the way for the young talent to come in, it wasn't like he was selling off the young potential to do so. If he had of done that, it would of maybe involved flogging off Ryan Giggs, so as to ensure room to play Beckham etc.

I also think its much easier in soccer to tell whether a player at say 18 is going to make it, compared to whether a new draftee at an afl club is going to make. Hopefully the academy will help fill that gap in time, but the draft really is still a lottery - even imo, when you have an academy basis for training players. It probably reduces the probability of getting a dud, but I'd still think that is much higher than it is in soccer.

Seaby was unlucky I think - he was more than serviceable, but I don't think anyone expected Mumford to turn our as good as he did and as quickly.

Remember though, that was a three way trade that also involved was it Staker going to Brisbane. So it wasn't a pure 2nd round pick either.

I think it is all fairly simple math for 2015............we appear to have a stack of talent that on the surface seems to me at least to be bordering or going over the cap unless there is retirements and or retirements plus trades.

Personally, I wouldnt be at all surprised if we tried to trade with WCE or Freo at the end of the year as I get the feeling that Jetts may want to move back sooner rather than later. Do either of those teams have a key defender we would want?

Haha. I love that comment. I was never able to work out how Silvagni got away with what he did. Some people say that it was the way they umpired the game then but the things he did were clearly in breach of the rules then and other backmen were pinged for doing the same. Maybe the umpires just loved him.

Freo also need KPPs. WCE are in somewhat better shape.

If Jetta wanted to go we could possibly package up some combo of the 3 West Australians, Jetta, Marsh and Lockyer for the their 1st round pick, which would be around a pick 7 I would think. That should land us a pretty decent KPP in this draft. Jetta loves Subiaco. But I'm not suggesting that we should initiate such a trade. Jetta has a couple of kids. I don't know if his partner is from WA or not. Hard to say if there's any desire to go back home.

What is the name of the book? At his peak he was more exciting than Beckam.
