    We've had enough McGuire!

Great story on AFL website out of Brisbane's win over Collingwood yesterday. I've copied bits of it below.

First-time Freeman puts Magpies to the sword

JONO Freeman had never been to the MCG before he travelled to the ground on Saturday to play for the Brisbane Lions against Collingwood.

A 198cm key forward, Freeman is the first product of the Lions' academy to make it onto the club's senior list.

And he saw the funny side in the fact he starred against Collingwood only a few weeks after the Magpies' president criticised the fact the Queensland and New South Wales clubs were able to recruit a select bunch of talented locals via their academy programs.

"It's quite ironic that I played against the Pies and Eddie McGuire was the one having a go at us," Freeman said.

Love the irony of an Academy player sticking it to Eddie. It is becoming personal now and surely Eddie will start to realise that this whole criticism of the interstate clubs is only going to be detrimental. Buckley has enough on his plate trying to win a match without the club president getting the opposition fired up

Tonight on his show he had a go at the AFL for the interchange cap. So no swans blaming this week!

He spoke about the conversation he had with the guy in the above photo. Apparently he spoke to him for 15 minutes.

He also said he is going to have a fans forum so that the club can explain to the supporters what is going on with regards to fitness, injuries and medical stuff. It's going to get ugly based on what the Collingwood supporters have been ranting!!

Eddie versus a thousand baying Pies fans. I'll press red for that.

Interesting. This is the sort of thing politicians do when they know their election campaign is in trouble. You only take on hostile constituents publicly when things are getting desperate, it can backfire on you badly.

Also pointed out that Collingwood has not missed the finals since 2005, so not many high draft picks to be had.

Didn't mention the Swans had been in approx. the same position since 2003, missing only once (I am happy to be corrected on this fact).

Geelong would be in the same boat, as would Hawthorn (probably).

I'm happy NOT to correct you on that fact.

He was giving out the excuses this morning on MMM, and mentioned their own finals fact as you've stated.
But went on to point out that they have done it without any handouts from the AFL.
Then included the "And no star players handed to us on a platter", which I assume was a crack at GWS, GC and the Sydney Swans.

He had a couple of swipes at Richmond last night. Maybe he's changing targets for a while.

One can only hope. But knowing Eddie his complaining is still being done, (but not in the public forum as much).
He will probably get what he wants through the AFL.

Or Travis Cloke. Or Heaf Shaw. Or Luke Ball. Or the fact they tanked to get a priority pick the year they drafted Thomas and Pendlebury.

Perhaps the supporters are starting to realise that to field a high performing team, you need to recruit well and manage your list effectively. Eddie can blame external factors all he wants but the truth for his club's list lies a lot closer to home. On the up side, while he continues to have swipes at other clubs instead of looking within they'll continue to underperform. On the downside, his influence is such that he might continue to damage all the great work we've done here with his attacks on the COLA, the Academy, free agency etc.
