VFL Round 17: NT Thunder v Sydney Swans Reserves

    NEAFL 2014 Round 17

NT Thunder v Sydney Swans Reserves

    Saturday 26th July 2014
    7.00pm
    TIO Stadium

The Reserves are well rested after their bye, and with 3 quality inclusions will be a stronger side than the one that battled Belconnen 2 weeks ago. They'll need every advantage at their disposal for they will be tackling one of the hardest away trips. The Thunder are almost unbeatable playing at home under lights, making full use of the conditions to triumph over their visitors. The Swans have laready played the Thunder earlier this year at Drummoyne Oval when the Thunder were top of the table but the Swans made light work of the visitors in an easy win. NT have the chance to leapfrog the Swans and take the advantage in this crucial battle for an invaluable Top 2 spot.

Ugg, I believe that the Rams are playing in the TAC Cup this weekend aren't they? If so I'm surprised that Davis would be playing for the swans reserves!

      Thanks ugg, love your work.

I assume Brandon is the travelling emergency?
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Maybe BJ will be a late inclusion. Although sometimes they take more than one travelling emergency and one of the others might not have travelled to Darwin. He will probably be travelling emergency as you say. Would love to see Membrey if Tip doesn't play although at this time it looks like he will. I think the club is bringing the young blokes on beautifully.

Nanka, George Hewitt, Zac, Lloydie, Biggsy, Towers, Timmy M, Harry Marsh & Xavier Richards have either had games or been emergencies. This shows genuine depth.

I know ugg is too modest/professional to draw attention to himself on the boards, but this will be his last reserves report for a few weeks before going on a little holiday before the finals, enjoy your break mate, a just reward for all your hard work and see you in September!!

Geez I hope we upgrade Biggs next year, he seems to have had a great year in the reserves and I thought he played well in the 1sts games last year.

I watched the replay and wouldn't recommended it to anyone. Both the game and the Swans were dismal. Some of the worst disposal I have ever seen. We didn't kick a goal in the first half and only Naismith kicked 2 goals in the 3rd qtr.

There's a mistake on the listed goal kickers as Naismith, not Nanka, kicked the 3 goals and probably deserved to be on the Best list as well. Biggs was BOG for the Swans and was the only player who looked AFL ready on game perfomance. Walsh played well, but missed a set shout from 15 out and a few field kicks missed targets as well. ROK was the best of the mids and looked good enough to play at senior level if need be. I'm sure Marsh's listing in the best is also a mistake as he was dreadful. They probably meant Lockyer, who was one of the Swans' best. I think he's doing well enough to get another year.

Based on this performance Marsh would be certain not to get another contract. Richards also had a terrible game and looked anything but an AFL player. I was surprised Dick made the best list too, as he had an error ridden game. I think LRT should be put on the LTIL and then given a retirement dinner, because there is no point making play football any longer and we can give Biggs his spot on the senior list.

Membrey hardly saw the ball. Nanka looked rusty, perhaps due to his thumb injury. Both had a couple of good moments. I didn't see Pat Mitchell in the 2nd half. He looks hopeless. We should pay him out and send him home.

If you get delisted by an AFL club, and put on 20 kilos, you can make the NT Thunder squad. They still moved a lot quicker and were far more skillful than our side.

Went against the advice and watched it...wasn't too bad a game, except for the scoreline, the quarter time score:

                            0.6 - 6
                            0.5 - 5

Didn't get better for the Swans from there.

I've watched a few of these replays, and it's always the same guys who impress. They may not get a bucket load of touches or kick a bag, but they have time, look composed and hit a target...and they chase.

Membrey - didn't do alot, but when he was near the ball he made stuff happen - looks like a footballer.
Hewett - is filling out nicely and has great disposal and awareness. He's the only player I'd put my head on the block for and say he will play alot of senior football. Like Hannebery he was the youngest in their draft, and it may be a good ploy going forward to continue with the strategy.
Biggs - looks awesome with ball in hand. Don't think he's there as a defender - but the same was said about Malcheski.
Nankervis and Naismiith - I'll put together, as I have the same comment - They both show a bit, particularly Nankervis, but both need more time. If Pyke went down I wouldn't be surprised if LRT came up as the next ruckman. I think both aren't big enough ATM for the rigours of senior football, maybe less so for Nankervis.

Obviously Towers and BJ didn't play, but they've always looked good in the games I've seen. Towers particularly - tacklers always seem to fall off him.

The others, Marsh, Lockeyer, Dick, wouldn't be surprised if they were delisted. Marsh couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

ROK can do the inside stuff, but doesn't provide much link around the ground.

I was never a fan, but I have no doubt Tommy Walsh already has his flight home booked - bad run with injuries have given him little chance.

As noted above, the Power boys are super fat for elite footballers, but the way the play, they don't need to be fit. I don't think i've watched a team with such even, high end foot skills in the middle. Lace out every time. The Swans on the other hand.... - though alot of top ups in the team.

I suspect there are a few of those boys who don't bother travelling. Their home record is far superior to their travelling one.
The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.

                              I too watched the replay.

Can't agree with the club that Marsh was in the best. Biggs was running around like the boy trying to plug too many holes in the dyke but he is a really good player. Thought Lockyer was good especially early.Naismith was more at ease than Toby. Dick is in my mind a keeper. He was the youngest on the list last year and should be given another year. An elite athlete who could improve a fair bit more.Best game I have seen Tommy Walsh play under a lot of pressure as well.

                              Membrey quality but not quantity.

Robinson a solid game with little help.

ROK still capable if needed. LRT a poor game.Marsh not much chop but was coming back from injury. Hewitt OK, shows glimpses.

XR OK under extreme pressure. Need to see more from him.

Too many toppies to worry too much about the result but Abe Davis is still a fair way from a high draft pick IMHO.
We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!
