Along with the Eddie vs the Swans thread, I have done a little clean up work and this thread is now re-opened. I couldn't be bothered to think of a description for why the deleted posts were deleted. I think anyone who read them would probably have a feel for why.

Just to pick up on Ludwig's opening post, he is right that RWO is a community best largely moderated by everyone. As actual moderators, our aim is to be like good umpires - ie you barely notice that we're here. On the other hand, if we really weren't here, you definitely would notice and it is not always easy to strike the right balance. The more members think about the nature of interactions they enjoy having with others, and post in a manner that encourages that kind of response, the less noticeable we become.

Back to the football analogies, think how less often you would swear at the TV if Joel Selwood didn't roll his shoulders every time he was tackled, if Paul Pupolo didn't duck his head, or if Lindsay Thomas, Adam Goodes and plenty of others didn't go out of their way to make sure the umpires noticed every single bit of contact they received from an opponent. The players haven't quite worked out how to moderate their own onfield behaviour to make the umpires' jobs easier but it would be great if they could.

And while some spectators love a melee, I find them a bit tedious. If someone gives you a little tap on the back of the head, you can walk away. You don't always have to respond by wrestling them to the ground, and encouraging others to join in. On the other hand, if you keep getting right in the face of other posters and find them retaliating often, it might act as a hint to change the way you approach other members and moderate the way you express your opinions. Because everything we post is just OUR opinion. We shouldn't start from the assumption that everyone just has to agree with us.

We do try to moderate according to our reading of how a majority of members would like the board to be moderated. However, I can guarantee that we can't please everyone all of the time, and there will be times you disagree with some action we have taken (or not taken). You can always use the report post function, or send one of the moderators a PM to express your concerns. We will listen. We may or may not agree. If addressed politely, we will generally respond and try to provide some context around why we have taken an action we have, or not taken any action.

Well said liz. The only thing I'd add to that (speaking as a mod on another site, not here) would be if a post of yours does happen to get deleted or moved, rest assured it isn't personal, it's just done to keep the discussion flowing and on topic.

For now at least we're more a commons of tragics than a tragedy of the commons.

Posting online basically follows the rules of good conversation and commonsense. Expect some feedback if you haven't got a grasp of those.

I also support the praise for the moderators. Great work. I also want to say that RWO is the only forum I read regularly and occasionally post to. The reason for this is that it is much more sane, rational and entertaining to read. All the others I have tried reading are chockers with personal attacks, truly stupid comments and outrageous claims. A typical chain of posts is something like this:

"Can't believe what a shocker XYZ player had. Such a retard."
"No way, he was BOG you moron"
"Who made you god's gift to AFL, dip#$%@??"
            "You're a complete faggot"
... and so on for dozens of posts.

Unreadable and unpleasant. We are fortunate to have our RWO community.

Policeman: "Yes, I was married once."

The moderators are saving me from myself at present.

I would also like to say well done.

Maybe if one can see another is saving one from oneself, one may rethink one's actions?
