'Roo' has been bitter about the Swans ever since Kurt chose us over his beloved Adelaide...he's normally more subtle than that though. Used to be one of my favourite players but I've lost all respect for him given his treatment of Sanderson...this article is just icing on the cake.

Ugg you can add Gunston to your list. I laughed when I read Riccuito's article because of the large number of "poached"
(his word) players Hawthorn has but particularly because of Gunston. Crows fans are still vitriolic about Gunston's defection!Comment

My girlfriend (a relatively new Swans convert ... but she's making good progress!) & I endured disgusting, obnoxious behaviour from a father/son combo (I really wanted to post a picture of the son to shame him but I suppose that's not appropriate but hopefully M9,Y6 will come across this post one day, but I doubt the 4 functioning neurones in his Neanderthalithic cranium would comprehend the offence he has caused). The constant vitriolic expletives directed particularly at Buddy & Goodsey, every time the Hawks goaled the large son would smugly turn around & flip the bird with both hands indiscriminately at Swans supporters. When an elderly Swans supporter behind him suggested it was enough, the intimidating ogre of a son offered a few choice words to him. But the worst thing was when his seat number was reported via text, no MCG security came to even talk to this big oaf & his ill mannered father. We pay a premium for tickets to endure that? My poor girlfriend (who wasn't impressed by some Port supporter behaviour at Adelaide oval earlier in the season) said she actually felt a bit fearful at the Granny with that Hawks bully in front of us ... but I'm proud to say she still cheered loudly for our boys all day, right until the end. I'm sure all clubs have their feral supporters ... but there seems to be a greater proportion of them in brown & gold. I had 3 of them in the Isle next to me on the flight home (thanks gentlemen for you pearls of gloating football wisdom for much of that flight). But there is hope. When I got off the plane, a young kid in a Hawthorn jumper walked up to me, extended his hand, smiling politely, and respectfully offered a good spirited "bad luck". He didn't make up for M9,Y6 ... but it's a start.Comment

I hope Plugger 46 posts on the issue of Hawthorn supporters. He and his family experienced their worst day ever at the footy. Sitting amongst only Hawthorn supporters they had to put up with a non stop barrage from a few bogans sitting directly behind them. Calling Goodea a drug dealer and anything else they could think up with the vitriol directed at them. Apparently a security guy said something at some stage and he was videoed and reported by someone but appears the other gutless Hawthorn rabble around them did nothing.
We're AFL members and we've attended 20+ Grand Finals. We're regulars at the footy, generally engage in a bit of a banter and to my mind, we've got pretty thick skins. This was something else though and clearly the worst day I've spent at the footy. The result was always going to ensure that it'd be an ordinary day but these three pigs took the focus off the train-wreck on the ground.
At no stage did any of them actually barrack for their team. Any time Hawthorn kicked a goal, there was a barrage of abuse launched at the Swans. Goodes copped the most of it with things like "you ice addict", "Mr Ice", "go and attack a 13 year-old girl again". Then there was the salary cap stuff which was slightly easier to cop. It was relentless however and despite being 10 goals in front, they didn't let up. As they were directly behind us, it was impossible to know if they were giggling to themselves but all they wanted to do was incite trouble. We were effectively the only Swans supporters in our bay and these heroes picked their mark.
My Father (not one to go quietly) responded to them but as you can imagine, that just stoked the fire. We later found out that they tried to intimidate my Mum and Sister when the two of us weren't at our seats.
A neutral grabbed us at half-time as we were walking downstairs. He told us that he could see what we were putting up with and had reported the three heroes. Security came across and tried their best to calm the situation. I'm not sure it made any real difference but it probably ensured that there wouldn't be a riot.
I will say that most Hawthorn supporters in the area were fine and perfectly respectful but they definitely seem to have more idiots than any other supporter base. My worst experiences have always been with Hawthorn supporters and a number of them have that 'get in your face' mentality. Two other groups of Hawthorn supporters gave us send-offs in the car park after the game. Why do people delight in the misery of others?
Nothing excuses their behaviour but I think people like McGuire and Newbold have contributed to it. They have created a hatred of our club which is bordering on unhealthy.Last edited by Plugger46; 29 September 2014, 10:42 AM.Bloods

Laughable from those writing our demise. I understand you are just angry from Saturday.
I can see us only getting better from here. I expect to finish top again.
The comparisons between Buddy and Lebron are crazy. Heat lost in the finals after everyone thought it was a certainty.
They won the next two championships
Bring it onComment

I just don't get it - I've got nothing against a bit of banter at the footy, but the vitriol coming out of some of their mouths is far beyond that. For goodness sake, your team is killing the next best team in the league on Grand Final day - you should be supporting them with all your might and celebrating that. But no, a minority (but a decent sized minority) would prefer to expend their energy belittling the other team, being racist towards their star players, or as it sounds like in your case Plugger, being intimidating.
And as you say, reporting the 'heroes' does little to fix the problem.
People like Newbold and McGuire are basically actively condoning these actions by the way they consistently stir the pot, especially McGuire. No doubt his smug face hasn't stopped smiling since Saturday.
You've only got to look at that link to the article that was put up last night on SMH and the comments on it, to see that there are plenty in the community that find such behaviour perfectly acceptable. Until everyone says 'no its not', we are not going to solve the problem as a society.

The problem with the all this blatant racism stems from Eddie McGuire getting off for his racist remarks against Adam. Large sections of the community feel that can openly make racist slurs and there are no ramifications. I said it at the time that Eddie should have been driven into oblivion. He should have been banned for life by the AFL and sacked from all his media jobs.
I am sure that Lumumba wants out of Collingwood because he doesn't want to work for a racist president.Comment

Sorry to hear about how bad your experience was Plugger - it seems to be badly concentrated in the AFL members section. I have Vic Platinum membership, and had similar experiences in Rd 18 in the AFL Members section. Being told to 'f' off and several more choice words on the way out by complete random Hawthorn fans was enough for me and my better half to put Hawthorn away games in Melbourne on the 'don't bother list'. That was ignoring all the dribble that came out of the mouths of a choice few sitting near us during the game.

The arrogance of the wees and poos fans is astounding, and that is what breeds the feral behaviour. I don't care if it not us that wins the flag in 2015, as long as someone takes them off their perch. Many of them are far from graceful winners, and even sorer losers when they do get beat.Bloods

Dont get upset by feral fans. When the time comes give it back to them in a spades.
Regarding racism, it aint going to be stamped out by naming a 13 year old This is only the start of the journey. Continue to name them. Get the kicked out and over time the message will get through.Comment

Another article that appeared today: Sports journalist Erin Riley trolled after commenting on AFL Grand Final
I know its from a female focused website, but its pretty sad that the original SMH article, which raised a number of issues seen by many fans at the game, has seen the author trolled like that. Australia has a long way to go to 'grow up' in this respect. Some pretty disgusting trolling has gone on in that case, just for speaking out and saying what she heard at the game is 'not ok'."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

In my book, doing that only creates a circular problem that continues to fester.
Completely concur on racism, but its tough when the first step (i.e. reporting them to that number or to security guards) at the ground usually results in absolutely nothing happening."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment
