Sounds like the club might have been trying to renegotiate, such that they can bring in players on amounts less than those they trade out. Is this just hypothetical, or does it indicate they have a strong interest in someone in particular (eg a Carlisle) and are willing to trade out someone (ala Tippo) to secure him? If so, sounds like the AFL has knocked this back.

Does this mean that they can only trade for players who are on current contacts <$300,000 or they can't offer more than $300,000?
As this applies for 2015 can they back end the contact payments for a recruit.

I guess both myself and The Age missed the exact terms and conditions first time around. At least I now know thanks to them being behind the news

No matter how we try and structure it, the VFL will stop us getting anyone good. $300k in 2016 with increases for 2017 and beyond is bound to be ruled out by the VFL as they will insist it can't be more than $300k average over the length of the contract.

A one year deal for 2016 at $300k is the best we can offer players worth more with a verbal promise to negotiate a better deal for 2017 onwards. Let's hope we already have the needed players on our list to see us through 2016 or that we have spied a cheap gem or two at other clubs that want to come to a contender.

All this why it's important to get both Mills AND Dunkley as they both appear to be AFL ready in 2016 and might be needed in the absence of any mature recruits this year.

              I think we are ok

I admit we haven't had the luxury of the Hawks getting spud Jnr and lake but we look alright still

Let's be fair Heeney and mills complimenting our current midfield is simply unbelievable !!

If I was Melb or Brisbane etc I would be spewing

                +1

Apart from the pure injustice of the decision I was happy for us to re-invest any spare funds in re-signing players or rolling any cap space to this year.

We may be able to uncover a Laidler-like nugget but I agree our list with Mills and Dunks is pretty strong

Good on Jake Niall for running it, but it isn't news. It just shows how poorly we have been treated. If we were a powerful Victorian club there's no way this would have been virtually unreported for six months.

Exactly! Or indeed a SA or WA club.

What if Jetta doesn't sign we could effectively have to trade him for nothing because we can't trade for a decent player and the other clubs know our hands are tied.

No, we can still trade for draft picks.

Which could be useful to get our Academy boys. If we had to lose Jetta (which would be a big loss) this would be some consolation.

The 'restriction of trade' rule for the Swans

I so hope that when we are free to do so, at our earliest opportunity we pull another 'Buddy-esque' move and shove it back up the AFL.
Right now recruiters can be spending all that free time, normally spend inventing way to snag top players, but looking into some brilliant ways of abusing the hell out of the system - within the rules of course
The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.

I would like to keep swampy marsh but get his blistering fast 193cm key defender brother up here for 2016

Get him in the system and see if he can do a Ted Richards ?
