The year was 1953 and it was published in the now defunct but highly respected newspaper, "The Argus", which was known for its technical advancement.(To print in colour in those days was extraordinary). The two players are Jim Taylor (left, my Dad) and Don Scott (whom I was named after the following year).Of course, also playing at the time was Ron "Smokey" Clegg, who wasn't named "Smokey" for nothing.
I remember as a kid on a Friday night Dad take us to Smokey's house and play cards until about 3 in the morning with Jack Dyer and Mopsy Fraser. It was a very smokey affair.
My father also went on to become Victoria's first "Marlboro Man" (shooting a rifle at a target, this was even before they rode horses in the ads) in the early 1960s. He died in 2000, as did a number of the Marlboro men, from lung cancer.
I hope Dane doesn't follow the same path.My father could not give up once he was hooked, and the all pervasiveness of smoking did not help either, especially when he was paid to do ads like this one.We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!Comment

Awesome story. Thanks Scottee. It's great that you have at least one momento. My grandfather played but all we have is his 1918 team photo. We don't even have his premiership medallion. He pawned it because he needed the money.Comment

My wife's grandfather played for the swans back in the days, we had had his funeral, two weeks ago, only a few games , but he grew up in south and was as tough as they come. His player card was on his coffin. R.I.P

James Graham. He played in the 1918 premiership. He didn't play the next year. He went up the Murray somewhere to coach. The VFL didn't have the glamour or as much attraction as it has now.Comment

Tony Smith is my cousin's son. Little bit less likely to mention it now! Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment
