I do not begrudge him for getting more $. He probably only has 2 - 3 seasons left so it was wise of him get as much as he could. I am sure that he has to to the utmost in looking after himself and family. At the end of the day football at the moment is his job and everyone seeks the best for themselves in their jobs.Comment

We would have to get a high first round for him which would mean that we could get Mills and Dunkley without sacrificing our draft selections in 2016 which I believe is a much stronger draft than this year. It also makes sense in that we have a glut of midfielders. No use having all these guns if some of them are playing in NEAFL.Comment

As much as I hate the thought of this story having any credence, it might explain why Mitchell decided to stay. Think about it; Hannas out, Mitchell in. Hannas would be a huge loss though. He's an absolute gun and so important to our team and form.

I won't regurge my earlier analysis of the proposed system but Hanners would be a straight swap for an early first rounder and would cancel out Mills with Dunkley then easily picked up without any further penalty due to the discount applied. If it was Mitchell then it would probably be an early second rounder which would probably mean that we don't lose our first pick next year.
I think salary cap management will also be an issue. We may well make the call that we will not be able to keep Hanners when he comes off contract under free agency and be open to trading him for an early first round pick and wish him the best. Equally we may view Mitchell as an unaffordable luxury at $400,000 a year if he is playing in the twos.
It all gets back to the main benefit of getting a list that is >50% homegrown, there is no go home factor and the issue of player retention is much reduced with a much higher chance of players staying for modest undersComment

By the time Hanners comes off contract I'd say that Tip will be having a reasonably large paycut, also Goodes will be retired as well as Shaw and most likely Richards. We should have enough money to be able to keep him.Twitter @cmdil

I'm sure that Victorian clubs would be in touch with Dan's manager. Regardless of what AFL wants us to believe re equal competition, there is always this problem of targeting Victorian players in non Victorian clubs to lure them back home. A few days ago there was a news from Geelong that they are still hoping to get Abblet back for GC Suns, which proves my point. If Dan wants to go back to VFL nothing will stop him in doing that.Comment
