The selections were made in part to suit the expected conditions. Cunningham and McGlynn didn't have much influence in the Freo game. Although a bit surprised by McGlynn's omission, it's a chance to see what Mitchell can do in conditions that enhance his skill set. The conditions should also suit the cleverness and experience of Goodes. Towers should sub, unless it's unexpectedly dry, then probably will be Mitchell with Towers tagging Murphy.
I earlier suggested that it was a good week for Naismith to come in for Pyke, but given the conditions and how well the Bulldogs are playing, it's probably not the time for this experiment. There will be better games for this in the coming weeks. I also thought having Goodes do some ruck work would be okay if there aren't any concerns about injuring his PCL again. Pyke is the best option this week and he should do well against Cordy and help us dominate the stoppages.
I would prefer the game to be played in the dry for the aesthetics, but wet conditions probably benefit us. It should slow down the Dogs quick ball movement and create a lot of turnovers. They also don't have much experience in wet conditions. We have improved playing in the wet from early last year. I particularly remember a well played win v. WCE in Perth when is was soaking wet.Comment

They way I understood his situation ...
He didn't want to be the sub 2 weeks in a row, and risk loosing what fitness and touch he had.
He's now had 2 games under his belt.
I hope he is sub. I think that's his best role these days.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

Don't really get the criticism of Pyke. He's no world beater but he's more than handy. Mumford has been dominating this season for the Giants but had probably his quietest game against us. Coming up against Sandilands is always difficult due to his height and size, but I thought Pyke did a decent enough job against him too.
I don't think Towers will be sub as he was the sub two weeks ago and I think he was the travelling emergency last week in Perth. Needs a full game. Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

And Tagdh is still the only Irish-Australian footballer in the history of VFL/AFL to have a premiership medallion. Coincidentally he is also the only Irish-Australian footballer with an All Ireland premiership medal. Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

Mitchell better not be sub. That is all.The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.Comment

But also on the team news...harsh on McGlynn but he will definitely come back better for it. Also at first I was a bit surprised by the Goodes selection however I think that given the conditions the game will slow down a fair bit which means his forward pressure -or lack there of- shouldn't be as big of an issue...and he is arguably still our cleanest player below his knees. Wouldn't be surprised to see him given plenty of midfield minutes if he doesn't start as sub.
Really hoping T.Mitch has a big influence on this contest and forces Horse to keep him in the team!Twitter @cmdil

As a Melburnian, I used to think that Sydney's winter weather was a couple of degrees warmer and dryer than here. But I don't recall a home game in the last year that was dry. What's going on? Maybe we should move back to sunny Melbourne.Comment

I'd be surprised if Goodes isn't the sub to be honest. As said previously, his reluctance to front up as sub a few weeks back was due to the need to play full games for fitness, so elected to go back to the seconds and play full games.
It's pretty clear Goodes needs to be managed during the year, so unless injuries to others dictate he has a spot in the seniors, full games in the seconds with the odd week as the sub in the seniors which in effect is a freshen up for him is a reasonable plan to get through the year and ensure he is a viable option come September.
On top of that, Towers has missed a fair bit of gametime in the past few weeks and I can't see the rationale in bringing him back to play as the sub.
I'll be sooooo glad when the sub rule gets the flick, most annoying rule change I know of...Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment
